When the hot water is switched on (emersion system) the central heating comes on at the same time. I have turned the hall thermostat down to zero, thinking this would help, but it doesn't.

Any suggestions?

Think you may have your systems mixed up,an immersion heater heats water in cylinder electrically,is your heating electric or gas, maybe you have a thermal storage unit,is there any makings on unit, can you post picture ?

With out more details hard to comment :(

Sorry, as I am not an expert, I may have not explained the situation correctly. I will try again.

There is a unit (ACL Lifestyle Model no LP522) which controls the hot water and the central heating. This unit can also be used as a timer, but we do not use this facility. When we want either or both functions we cick the appropriate button(s).

This unit is connected to the immersion heater (green cyclinder tank) and the gas central heating. There is also the main water tank in the loft. As far as I am aware we do not have a storage heater.

In this case, when the hot water only button is switched on, the radiators in the house are also activated which is not too bad in winter, but now the warmer weather is here, it is not so good.

Is it simply an electrical fault with the ACL unit or something more serious?

Thanking you in advance.

If you have one of these

it may just be sticking or it may need changing

Normal location for the motorised valve is next to the hot water cylinder. You may have two valves that have two ports instead of one valve with three ports.
If you have one of these then it sounds as if it is sticking.

Is it called a "mid-position valve"?

If so, I have located it. There is a switch which seems to be loose, moves quite freely, should this be pressed in firmly or left as it is?

If not this, how do I know of it is sticking and how do I unstick it?

Thank you.

Try tool station for a replacement sounds like it is jammed open to me so doesnt shut off either the h/w or c/h and the thermostat doesn't come into play replace the mid position and you should be fine.
