Hi,

I'm trying to understand the water system in my new apartment. It's in a block of 8 apartments with no gas supply, i.e. everything is electric.

I have a Heatrae Sadia Megaflo HE DD170 hot water cylinder on Economy 7, which heats up during the night. I have the following items (from the ceiling to the ground) in this order: water meter, mains shut off valve, joint leading to the tank (cold in) on the same pipe. Here's the first question: Am I correct in understanding the water gets pumped up and then distributed to all apartments on the way down? It would make sense for it to go through the meter first, then the mains shut off valve, and then go into the water tank.

The second question then: how does it work that when I turn the main water supply off, I have no water in the taps even though there is a whole tank of water between the valve and the tap? I can see the "hot out" pipe coming out of the tank going straight into the tap behind the cupboard wall - how come that if the mains valve is turned off (and a solid distance away from that "hot out" pipe) I immediately have no hot/cold water?

Third question: Can I turn the water mains off but leave the water tank heating on? One would think that it's a closed system and the water is always in the water tank, even if the mains is off, as I can't drain the tank through the pipes, so the tank should never run dry, should it?

Thanks!
