hi guys and girls,

as the title says, since i read so so much about the fact that fast trackers have little chance of getting a job i was just wondering if there are any on here that wish to share their views and experiences of how they have or havent got into the trade since doing their course.

looking forward to hearing from you all.

I did the c+g and nvq level 2 with OLCI. it took me two years and cost £6,000.

I qualified in May 08 and can't get a job for love nor money with a company. No body seems to want newly qualified plumbers especially when there are so many experienced guys out there looking for work.

Fortunately I kept my regular job so no worries with bills and stuff.
In November I advertised in a local paper and haven't stopped since. It's not enough to go full time but it's great for getting my confidence, skills and experience up plus the extra money comes in handy. The downsides is I work almost every weekend Saturday and a lot of Sundays and then small jobs in evenings after work.

Cross that with coming on this forum regularly you'll learn loads but as for getting a job I think it's the luck of the draw.

I'm applying for every plumbing job I see whether I'm suitable or not just on the off chance the company has something else on the back burner I am suitable for.

Good luck with it all mate.

Tosh

Tosh. That is something I have thought about. Putting an advert out there and doing jobs on an evening around my current job. As with the countrys current economic climate I wouldnt fancy going self employed. Now for this I would need a van and PL insurance. What else would I need to do?

van - yes (i started out in my old VW polo however got a van now)
PL insurance - Definatley a must!!!
Tools - Allways Helpful
Business cards - Not a must but i would

these are the basics but im sure ill think of one or two other things after i click the submit button.

Tosh, simular to you i also pay'd £7000 for my course which finished in dec last year. The course was a 2 year one, but i managed to complete it in nearly a year.
The guy that sold me the course said there was loads of work etc, and getting a job would be a doddle. Unfortunalty, during and even up to writing this post, i have sent a letter to nearly every plumber in my area (nearly 100miles radius) and only had single figure replys, only saying good luck with finding work.
I have nearly 100 letters to send in the morning, as it was over 6mths ago i wrote my last batch, but being unemployed makes things harder.

I would love to go self employed, but personally feal more experience is needed before i can happily tell the customer how to sort a issue they may have, by this i mean fault finding, as actual plumbing is straight forward, as long as you do your homework!

:)

I just use my own car instead of a van, only one person has commented and said they thought I'd be in a van, I just said I usually am but it's in the garage.

Most of my tool I already had because when I first started doing the course that's all I asked for when it came to birthdays or christmas.

Parts you gather as you go along as does knowledge and experience.

I've come on this website a number of times to find answers I'm not sure about.

I put an advert in the local paper only in NOvember and I haven't stopped since. The biggest benefit on my add was saying 'No job too small'.

A lot of more experienced plumbers (certainly the ones round here anyway) are not interested in little jobs, leaking taps, toilets that won;t flush etc. They all come to me which is great for experience but bad for rest time.

I've now worked 32 days straight without a day off. That's doing my regular job mon to Fri 9-5 and eve's and weekends plumbing.

You've got to be prepared to do whatever it takes and in this recession that may mean going alone even if it scares you ****less. I spent 6 months after finishing my exams writing to companies to get a job before putting my add out there. You need to keep on top of your skills or you'll forget what you've learnt.

You will make very little money out of it and any mistakes you pay for but you get the experience and any little extra money is a bonus.

I'm still looking for a company to work with and applying for everything job I see but working on my own is a real confidence and skills booster.

Good luck with it all.

Tosh

Oh yeah I forgot,
There is also a company on the net that will print you FREE business cards as long you have their web address on the back of them. YOu only get a limit of 250 but it's free. My regular job is copier/printer engineer so I just print all mine off at work anyway but this is a really good website.

Check out the website at........ www.vistaprint.co.uk

Regards Tosh.

forget workin for someone else pal, get yourself started on ur own like the guys say and you'll be flying in no time.

finished my c&g 2 years ago, pottered around working in unrelated jobs for 12 months then just thought, balls to this, and got in touch with 'princes trust'.

they'll give you great help with starting up and even give you free courses in advertising, accounts etc. i applied for a 'new small businesses loan' thru them and got 3k at 3% interest. i paid £20 a month back til i got on my feet and then increased it appropriatley. always on hand to giv u help, advice etc.

now im own boss, still learning as i go but the main ingredient in this whole process is having confidence to take jobs outta ur comfort zone. just get into deep end quickly as possible, best way to learn and its only water at end of day.

good to know a couple guys in the trade for help and advice. had 1 mate who's heating engineer out couple of times to sort c/h out 4 me coz its gone **** up. only way to learn tho.

good luck in whateva u do.

w1nxn - glad I'm not the only one who's asked heating engineers out!! As you say, only way to learn. Well, nearly the only way ...

I've cleared my course costs and van, tools, etc since finishing my course last March. Hard work, but Richard Branson, Alan Sugar etal don't pretend you don't make a success unless you work hard.

My only regret is that I didn't start a "trade" many years ago. I've spent the last decade floundering and trying different things out (all office based). Now I feel I really am doing something constructive and a proper job.

January was very quiet for me and I was rather worried last week when still no work coming in. But last few days, I've found another customer and after seeing him he asked me to go next door to a previous customer. And another customer from the summer has just asked me to install a new shower and enclosure and tiling. And this morning off to another person, who was recommended to me, to look at fitting two showers, fixing 4 radiators and a Saniflo .... oh joy!!!

Mustn't grumble though. Work is work = food and mortgage paid off.

good stuff 'dont know it all'

just read my previous post and sound like that tv ad 'and now im my own boss gary' ha.

jan was quiet also but feb seems to be picking up well and got full march which is all good.

hope all keeps well.

its excellent to see this many replies to this thread, its great to know that its not all doom 'n' gloom for the fast trackers although it is alot harder to get into the trade that way,

i was shocked the other day when i was chatting to a builder i do plumbing jobs for on a very very regular basis when he said he only gives business to tradesmen he knows are reliable and neat and leave a good job in place unlike the last plumber, i thought ooh thats nice to know im doing a good job lol.

always like getting compliments and im getting busier slowly,
