I have an isolation valve in the heating system which has sprung a leak from the center screw. How can I change this valve? Do I really have to drain the heating system?

You're not Andrea Smith from Langley park school are you? If so I'll come and change it free of charge!;)

Ballafix type valves don't belong on heating systems, do you really need it? Cut it out and replace with pipe.

Same point with me, - isolating valves on heating systems need to be up to the job. Isolating valves with the screw in the centre are usually not good quality & restrictive & leak at seal.
Can perhaps be replaced without a drain down if done by a professional

agree, most ballafix type isolation valves are only rated for cold and hot water, 65 degrees.

As said above, the best option is to drain the system and replace the isolation valve with some pipe. You may not need to drain the system fully, just enough to drop the pressure down to 0bar, if its a pressurised system. If its a gravity fed system, then its a bit more complicated and you will have to turn the supply off to the F/E tank before draining.
Having said all that, I do not recommend doing anything of the above if you don't have all the necessary tools, materials and experience for the job.
