Any tips?

i went to job the other week, someone had been out and said Cust had a blocked cold feed. It was correct but the customer said engineer didn't test anything he just knew.

What's the best way to detect this what tests can I do?

on heating? drain and bit out and see if it refills

Never used one, but I think running a magnet over it does it , obviously shouldnt stick .

Check theres nothing fallen in loft tank. I've had feeds blocked with all sorts of creepy crawlies before. If no signs of anything up there, Link a hose to outside tap - Blast mains down the cold feed.
It's probably just an air lock.
I think I remember you saying you work for Dyno on here before. If so, the previous engineer probably got the job at the end of the day and swerved it as would take a while.

Vent a rad but no water or air comes out sometimes indicates it!

Put your hose on the lowest drain cock, if the F & E tank does not start to empty you've got a blocked cold feed! If needs be back fill the system to get it going!

On the contrary. The magnet should stick if it is a blocked cold feed. Locate where the cold feed tees into the system and run the magnet around that area. If the magnet sticks, cut out the section of pipe and remake. Job done. The build up of sludge is what attracts the magnet.

Lol sorry my fault ..... Just testing

Magnet for me. Won't stick to copper, non ferrous, but if full of iron oxide it will. Then you have a problem.
