Hi there,
I need to change the immersion element of the hot cylinder, is 900mm Ht by 500 diameters. What size of element should I get (dual element) i have a spare 11" dual element is that enough, what do you take in considerations to size a immersion element?
thanks

Several things to take into account Mike .. its not the length that counts:):):)... It depends on what "recovery time" you want i.e the length of time to get the water back up to the storage temperature.

This is a function of the volume of water, the temperature increase required, the time required to heat the water vs the kWh rating of the element.

example:

130 litre cylinder (normal)= 130 Kg up to 60 deg. C from (say) 14 deg. C

130x44 = 5720 kCal
5720 x 0.001163 = 6.65 kWh

The above is to heat the whole cylinder contents in one hour but actually the HW will rise to the top and be usable in a short time .. so usually a 3 kwh rated immersion (in this case 2 x 1.5 or any combination) will do the job, heating the whole contents in 2 hours or so depending on the position of the heaters & thermostats .. anything less will be slow to recover.

The longer the immersion the more the heating is spread throughout the cylinder giving a more general heating of the water .. the shorter stub heaters will give faster but smaller quantities of hot water at the top of the cylinder.

You also have to be careful that the electrical wiring/fusing is capable of carrying the load e.g 6.6kWh will draw 27.5 amps at 240v anything other than a straight replacement needs a professional and even then should.

hope this helps.

And don't forget the safety overheat requirement for immersion heaters now.

Some immersion heaters on the thermostat failing, have carried on heating the water, until the water has backed up into the plastic storage cistern which has in turn collapsed.

Google HSE scalding.

Thanks guys! tips very useful,I can see now where i'm going,
much appreciated.
Just a last one, to change an immersion, do you need both plumber and electrician or one can do the all job?
