...but I ended up a chef!

Hello, my name is Jamie and I'm 25 and I've come here to learn. I am in the process of renovating my first house, using the internet and my ability to pick things up quickly. I like to do things myself, or at least know whats going on and why. I am about to fit a new bathroom and kitchen, and I'm considering my options in regards to under floor heating and the shower. I'm sure I will have various questions soon, but I'll start with an easy generic one.

I need to get a new gas supply fitted in the kitchen. I have worked out the pressure drop and know what needs doing. Would it be considered rude for me to get the copper myself, attach the pipe clips, and then choose the cheapest over the phone quote from a gas registered plumber/engineer?

I don't like to waste money on anything that I would enjoy doing myself, and after some weird multi-switch light configurations, socket/light/switch locations and general plaster destruction courtesy of the electrician who did the re-wire, I wish I would have planned and fitted the wires/sockets myself and just got someone to connect it all up and test it.

Do you professionals see people like me (I have been called a control freak numerous times) as a pain in the backside? Am I worse than someone who keeps changing their mind and doesn't know what they want? Do you find it annoying being watched? Because I followed the electrician around quite a bit, which I sensed annoyed him, but if I wasn't there he would have been stuck in the crawlspace under the floorboards a lot longer when he misjudged the depth and jumped in without a means of getting back out (in his defence, the floor of the crawlspace got increasingly lower without it being noticable, so he might of been able to get back out in the lounge but not the hall!)

Thank you in advance :)

Yes, it is rude to source all your own materials but it's up to you dude, the gas engineer would really want to do all the pipework their self, i know i would.
I personally hate being watched, I don't mind a bit of chat and showing the customer things but i don't like a parrot on my shoulder watching.
Cheers Ian

Would it be rude for me to turn up at your restaurant with a tesco bag of food and a camping stove?

welcome to the forum!

Remember jamie that you have to stick to certain practices, we do too.
we install stuff to regs without even thinking, i doubt we could tell you the reasons we do half of the stuff as its second nature. Leave it up to your gsr. They will likely have a different view on how to fit the pipework..

as for sourcing the materials yourself.

imagine if i turned up with a fish for you to cook and i got food poisoning, whos responsibility is it?

same goes for materials, have your gsr source everything :)

Welcome Jamie. Things aren't as simple as they seem and I doubt you could install cable in line with the regs, the same will hold true for a gas pipe.

You simply don't know what you need to know to do it right.

Wind up surley
if not, god bless the guys who work for this one, they might get some good scran (thats food)

I feel sorry for the sparkie being followed about lol...

Crack on. You wont take a blind bit of notice of any advice that anybody gives you on here.

You can watch all you want but you wont see the regs that are being followed as they are in the head

I understand people being fussy & wanting to make sure they get a perfect job & without damage, but there is a limit to how you approach this!
Try getting a top class & honest tradesman every time & you won't need to follow him around. Just negotiate any of your thoughts with him at time of pricing & then don't overstep your agreement.

Put it this way - If I asked you to make a meal out of food I had brought into your restaurant, told you i had studied cooking on the internet & then told you what way to prepare the food, what temperature to set the ovens at and followed you around the kitchen, - what would your words be to me?
And a chefs job is largely unskilled compared to plumbing.

they should do a new programme customers from hell. pretty sure you would fit the profile nicely.
Why is it that when go for cheapest they still expect the best quality work. A bit like comparing yourself to Michel Roux Jr or Monica Galetti. i know which one i would choose . cook the same dish but we all know which 1 we would prefer to eat.

Hi Jamie,I wont add to the varying degrees of 'aggravation' you have already received, but basically you are breaking all the rules.Own materials are a no no,we supply and take responsibility.Being shadowed is one of the things we dread most. The time to pick the brains of your tradesman is when you are selecting him and then planning/writing down what your specific requirements are.You then let him get on with it.The odd chat about progress is reasonable. There is a thin line between a perfectionist and control freak.Even the former can be a pain. Are you sure your sparky's dive under the floorboards was not an escape attempt?!!!! GOOD LUCK.Just select a good tradesman and keep a sensible distance.

the thing is jamie, if you supply materials your gas engineer won't guarantee them. only what he has supplied. if you fit something and it is not to regulations it will need doing again which will cost you twice. these are things that you must consider before going down the route you want to take. as said get an engineer onboard at the start and discuss your requirements with him/her.

Welcome Jamie. Surely you have the right direction of successful including on the best forum posts.. good doing it while you are young.
