I'm trying to be a plumber I done a nvql2 two year tech course and complete I just can't seem to find away to get into the door to complete the nvql2 because everyone I ask doesn't seem to have work to offer. So I'm stuck. Any advice on what's the best thing to do please help.

I've just completed the level 2 C&G diploma. It's a tough road but I literally just ask every plumber I bump into if I can shadow them. I also use twitter to follow other plumbers and ask them too. I ring up/email plumbers from Yellow Pages etc and just pimp myself out in a hope that someone will say "sure mate, hop on board!".

Also, doesn't hurt to ask around here. There is a 'Looking for Work' section of the forum, create a post on there maybe.

I've just met a fella on my sparky course who has a cousin who does bathroom/kitchen design and luckily he might be taking me on to do the plumbing for some jobs. It's just a case of asking everyone and anyone and being tenacious.

I read my books still, and buy and read more books all the time to keep the knowledge in my head. I also read a lot on here, there is a well of info and bits to learn and everyone is really helpful and encouraging.

I also try and do jobs for friends and friends of friends etc. And I'll give you the same advice I was given, get public liability insurance BEFORE you do any work. Mates can turn into enemies if you mess up their carpet! ;)

Good luck man.. Just keep at it!

I don't know why these young guys have to pimp thereselves it wasn't like that back in the day I do really feel sorry for them and I wish each and every one of them all the very best.
Stick with it boys (and lasses) if its what you really want...brum

Ah I don't mind pimping myself out, it becomes fun stalking people after a while. Saying that though, the 9 restraining orders are a bit harsh! :p

Perhaps offer to work at a reduced rate for a probationary period. If they like you then they can keep you on at a normal rate. If not then at least your geting experience under your belt and a referee.

I'm about to start my Youtube Level 3 in Plumbing...got to watch thirty videos over nine minutes duration.
Come join me.

:laugh out loud:

Even though I'm one of those silly idiots who did a 6 week course, I had to chuckle inside as it's bloody true :/

I'm just looking forward to the journey of experience as the 6 week course was the opening of the door!! At least it made me realise I do actually want to be a plumber :)

Oh and I was able to get a PlumFix account woohoo :) thanks City and Guilds haha

Thanks for the advice people I will carry on and not give up doing what I love to do. Maybe I will start do small jobs and just work it all out myself and buy some dvds but also look for work.

Have you sent letters to every plumber in your area?
I sent 50-100 letters out and followed them up with a phone call. Took me over 6months to get an apprenticeship even though I was offering to work for free.
I put posters in plumbers merchants, one was in the style of an old 'wanted' sign.
There are people being taken on all the time so you will get something - you just have to have to plug away with the letters and phone calls

Thanks for the advice I've been emailing My cv to lots of place but I will also take your advice. If that's what it takes that's what I'll do thanks again.

I was doing this:
