Hiya,

I have an Ideal Classic FF230 in my house with the sealed system kit and I’ve been having pressure issues with it the past few weeks where it comes on, the pressure steadily rises to 3 bar and then vents via the PRV and then when it cools down the pressure is zero.

I’ve had British Gas come out to look at it twice under the homecare agreement, the first guy said it was the expansion vessel and removed it, re pressurised it and then put it back and said it was all fixed and left, however later that day it all happened again so I called them back and this time someone different came out who was reluctant to even touch it, he said the boiler is obsolete, replacement parts aren’t available and so because of its age if he starts messing around with it and breaks it then that will be it, I told him to at least try and we’ll deal with the consequences if and when they happen. He spent a while fiddling with it, cleaned up the PRV valve and said there must be a leak somewhere causing the issues although couldn’t find any evidence of it and said the boiler will need replacing.

Now I’m fully aware of the BG sales tactics and have been warned in the past by older engineers to not listen as the boiler is solid, parts are available and to only replace it when it does actually pack up, so I’m going to get a second opinion from a local independent firm but being my inquisitive self and to help me argue back with BG in the future I just wondered if anyone could help me understand a few points……

The boiler still operates fine even when the pressure reads zero and was my understanding that it shouldn’t run in this situation

Surely if there was a leak then it wouldn’t be causing it to over pressurise? When I top it up when cold, the pressure holds until it runs.

My understanding is the sealed system bit is completely external to the boiler itself so therefore shouldn’t the problem be external to the boiler itself?

Many Thanks in advance 😊
