Gas Engineer

pilot light is working fine,

at first i thought it had something to do with the 3 port valve as the lever had no resistance, but then realised that when controls are calling the pump comes on with hw or ch so i presume its working ok..

could it be a weak pump? gas valve?

whats the best way to test im not a pot shot engineer i like to be sure before i let my tools loose :83:

thanks

I don't recall this model having an overheat 'stat so.

Have you power to the boiler thermostat?
If so, check for power at the gas valve.

if the pilots lit check for 240v at the gas valve if its there gas valves shot,if theres not 240 volts there as MM said check for 240 ar the stat, though 9 times out of ten it wont be the thermostat this is one of the most basic faults you can get so should not stress you too much finding out the cause

Yes mate it's only a cheapo one but it will read 240v so good enough

Red/brown constant 240v
blue/back switched live when pump comes on 240v

orr?

do a continuity test on your leads first, prove them

if you test live to neutral and get no voltage always test live to a known earth as a broken neutral will give no voltage but it will still be live

Is getting power at live and power at neutral with a test light screwdriver not enough?

also if I don't have power at boiler stat but pump is working could it be anything else other than a rat that's chewed through the wire? Boilers outside

Neon screwdriver I no use, you need a meter.
What your looking for is
L-N 240 v
L-E 240 v
N-E 0 v or very close to zero.

Scary!!!

To be GSR do you not have to know how to test for safety? basic polarity and earth continuity?? I'f I'm being a bit harsh then forgive me G60rge but from what you've posted so far I don't think you know enough to be messing with someone else's appliance IMHO .... This may be a private GSR only forum but to be honest your lack of knowledge scares me!!!! How long you been GSR?

I passed my exams at able skills, we did nothing what so ever to do with electrical testing, passing your acs teaches you how to test appliances are working safely and how to work on gas safely, which I do very well thank you very much.

its all ******** if you ask me gas engineers should be part p qualified to work on boiler repairs so maybe your right I shouldn't be working on this, fact is I passed this job on to someone else earlier today as I wasn't comfortable with it and don't really need the money but yes it's scary knowing there's people who are.

thanks for your input even if it was a bullet!

g60rge , youve done wrong again am afraid what you should of done is passed this job on explain you want no money but you want to come so you can see what they do to diagnose it

Thank you for your honest g60rge ... It took me 3yrs before I was let loose alone on appliances. That was when the one in your question was a new install! :) Personally i think there's something lacking if you aren't given the basic skills in electrical testing.

You did the right thing in recognising your limitations though and i applaud you for it. :)

Hmm!
Definitely a failing on my part as I automatically expect a boiler diagnostic engineer to be competent in basic electrical testing.

Training nowadays seems pretty poor imo.

i did commercial gas at college UP1A limited scope.. spent about 10 mths of yr4 doing testing and purging, meters etc, and then about 2 months doing full scope, indirect fired appliances, domestic changeover, cookers, fire, boilers and water heaters..

In all that time not one bit of electrical testing.

No complaints on the gas training whatsoever IV's, pressure losses, test and purge calculations, etc were drummed into us.

but did i feel armed to go out and tackle boiler faults??? no way
