my mate has just moved in to a council flat. He has a storage cylinder with an electrical heating element but it is also connected to the boiler.
The hot water seems to be very hot and he wants to know why he has both. Is it right the heating element seems to be on all the time.
I said that he should call the council has it is too hot and also i think the reason for both types is that one is for heating and the other is just for hot water.
i am i correct.

Turn the electrical immersion heater off (follow cable back to find the switch) it is only there as a stand-by should the boiler fail. It is much cheaper to use the boiler to heat hot water. What is hot ?? temperature of water should be 60 - 65deg C.

If he finds that the electric element is off, and wants to reduce the temperature of the hot water, there is usually a thermostat attached to the lower part of the cylinder (a little white box held in place with a band) which should have a range of temperatures that can be selected by using a screwdriver to turn the dial. Some cylinder stats are not very accurate, so he may need to make adjustments by trial and error to get the temperature he wants. If the adjustments makes no difference and the water stays very hot, chances are the cylinder thermostat is faulty.

and they are very cheap, dont try yourself though if you dont know what your doing

When turning the cylinder stat down you need to bear in mind that all stored water needs to be above 60degC, although saying that if the stat is placed closer to the bottom than it should be, aprox 1/3, then turning it down to about 55 shouldn't be a problem! also I turned up to a job complaining of excessivly hot water and pump constantly running only to find the stat set to max 90, pointed out that the stat was in degC and not degF.
