Hi I have an Immersion and stat that has gone and needs replacing, Its in the top and the immersion and the cylinder are old. I have tried to undo it with my box spanner but it will not budge. Have any of you got any tips or ideas on how to budge it without damaging the cylinder. Thanks.

3' stilsons and a blow torch, get some heat on and turn with the stilsons. Don't force it, takes time but should come off.

Cant you just replace the stat and leave the immersion body, bye the stat on its own from most merchants

As a last resort you can drill a series of holes in a straight line working from the outside edge inwards and very carefully use a cold chisel along the holes to reduce the pressure of the outside wall BUT this is a last resort.

If you know someone with a good megger then they can test to see if the element itself is broken , more precise than continuity tester lol

Pipe benders as extra leverage on the spanner is what I have had to resort to if short lengths of pipe don't do the trick.

Hi thanks. Yes I have put a meter on it and I am getting a circuit from the element to the earth. So I believe it is earthing through the water. I do have a proper immersion spanner but will try the stilsons as well and heat it up at the same time. Thanks

Hit your immersion spanner with a club hammer before you drain any water off,,,,be careful with stillsons as they may twist and split the cylinder...

you dont need a low resistance ohms meter to test, any half decent multimeter will do fine just mek sure the power is isolated.

im mis-reading this or you need to read the instructions that come with the meter its earthing thru the water !

Continuity test through terminals and check ohms readings will show if immersion has gone

I do get the hint the OP has no idea ,,,,,,,, FLOOD!!

As above, leave cylinder full to keep the strength and clout the immersion spanner until the immersion starts to move. I've rarely failedto get one out this way.

i pulled an immersion stat last week and the pocket dropped off leaving a very pretty spout of water arcing across the bathroom, corporal jones did a bit of running round for a bit till I found all the gate valves behind the big stack of towels, 2 hours to break the immersion free, thank christ for george the wetndry vac :)
