a plumber mate of mine said only imperfection pipe works require ptfe or compound. As long as pipe works are perfectly straight, olive is sufficient. PTFE and compound are to hide flaws. Is he right?

This has been covered many times. It's purely a case of personal preference whether PTFE or a sealing compound is used or nothing at all.

I don't put anything on new Kuterlite fittings, but tape up cheap imports or old compressed pipe.

I think I have a ptfe fettish,

I carry 3 rolls in by tool bag 10 spare on the van and a couple in my pockets,

If I get down and dirty with my girlfriend then there is a roll of PTFE on the side just to fill gaps if needed..................
