just been to sort out a toilet that wont flush tryed replacing the plastic bit in the syphon didnt work need to put a new one in .in the morning

its a CC toilet and i dont think the donut is sealing back up again properly cos from the base of the cistern it drips slightly i can only think i need to put a new donut in thats probably the first time the cistern has been removed ever since it was insatlled

any ideas or would it be normal to replace the donut

the syphon comes through the cistern then a metal plate with screws then the rubber donut is there a special type for this or is it standard

all the same as far as the plate but there are different doughnuts ranging in shape and matirial best to get the nearest you can to the one you take out there not exspenive so buy a couple before you start might be best

ok didnt word it very well inside the syphon the plunger that lifts up when you flush the flimsy bit of plastic was shot to bits

Nowadays as complete syphons are so cheap I dont replace the syphon disc anymore just replace the complete syphon
You can purchase the doughnuts no problem and it is not unusual to replace this.you can also get a kit that includes the doughnut and the metal cistern holding plate and locking bolts ,as some times you have to cut the old bolts off as all corroded,I use my small bremel with metal cutting disc to do this if required

puddle. what are you thinking?. a syphon cost between £5 & £10,
a syphonic washer cost 10p or make your own for nowt from damp-proofing plastic (1000 grade) for 10p per hundred and the work is the same, if not sometimes less and don't need all parts in van?.

If you do take it off. Replace donut and possibly back plate, bolts and nuts as well. The bolts can rust.
Remember to renew all the rubber syphon washers as well.
In point I think you can get a CC kit with it all in.

A bit of silicon grease on the syphon back nut threads helps as well.

But don't get it on the washers, they go all sqidgy and squeeze out all over the place if you do.

Its choice when replacing whether you put the donut on the pan and land the cistern on the donut or put the donut over the syphon backnut and then land it on the pan.

One way it can keep falling off as you lift the cistern, keeping it dry usually keeps it in place though. The other way you can't see properly whether the donut is sitting right. Your choice.

Don't over tighten, it makes them leak and pulls the back plate out of shape. Time and patience is the key.

give me a break it was my first job in someones house all sorted now though and a good lesson learnt

Pleased to hear job sorted out ok,hopefully it will go towards building your confedence up in the trade
You have already show you have one of the main skills required and that is admitting when you are not sure of something and seeking advise
If more people did this,there would be alot more works carried out correctly and happy customers
