Hi all
Came across a cylinder today with 2 15mm pipes coming out of where the immersion normally is. These pipes came directly off the 3 port valve and into the cylinder. The thing is, the indirect cylinder also had 28mm pipes from the standard coil on the cylinder disapearing underfloor. The heat only boiler was a potterton (performa i think). Any one know what this system is??

Label on cylinder says indirect coil and definitely no solar. System is quite old.

got a picture you can post, also the unit you described sounds like an immersion hot water heat exchanger

british gas used to fit these many years ago when a coal fire was ripped out. Fit a baxi bbu and convert old direct cylinder into an indirect with y plan. Saved customer a little money i suppose when times were harder.

we used to take the immersor out and fit a "salamander blade" which converted a direct cylinder to an indirest as the 2 x 15mm piupes were flow and return to heat the water, cant really remember how well they worked, but dont reaally remember them being cause for too many complaints so they cant have been too bad, not really sure why your cylinder would have this and a coil

If old direct cylinder probably 28mm pipe to old back boiler box in fire place or stove, this will have been disconnected and when system upgraded to gas ,to save new indirect cylinder having to be fitted, you fitted coil ,like to the solar one, in immersion hole, servo warm did this alot, many said at the time should change cylinder but shows they were wrong as lasted this long
See they have updated idea to solar coil to again prevent change of cylinder again:)

So because no back boiler (heat only wall boiler fitted) the 28mm coil pipes must go somewhere. This system wouldnt effect putting inhibiter in the f+e tank would it? That would be primatic right?

inhibitor will be fine as the blade is sealed from the domestic water

It was used to convert direct cylinders to indirect, but as you say, your cylinder was already an indirect type, my thoughts are: maybe someone wanted the means to heat just half the cylinder using it, or the whole cylinder using the main coil & it together. I came across these but I remember they posed problems with electronic ignition type boiler( pott Netaheat Mk1) as the small surface area & volume caused the boiler to constantly start & stop which in turn caused the ignition unit to fail prematurely..
Martin.

This boiler does seem to go off and re light itself but i thought this may be due to air in system as it had just been drained and flushed.
