Hi, I am installing a bathroom for the first time - I am using the old pipework and flexi pipes with tap connectors. I know i must turn the stop tap off but what else will i need to turn off, It is a combi boiler - what are the gate valves and do i turn them off??

Any help grateful

If the house has a combi then all you need to do is turn off the mains stoptap. Some houses may have a combi and a hot water cylinder but these are rare.

Ist bathroom?

Use battons on bath, dont use mains pressure taps on gravity.

Hmm!

Fill a kettle of water first, you may want a brew while your working or if its not your house the owner might want a drink while you have got the water off.

The combi which supplies the hot water is fed off the mains water and the cold is usually fed off the mains water . So turning off the main stop tap turns all the water in the house off.

I would recommend, as soon as you can, fit isolation valves in the bathroom water supplies then turn the combi back on. That way they should get water downstairs.

Make sure you turn the electric off to the combi.

thankyou very much, what would i do if it had a hot water ci9stern?

In an open vented system you can turn the hot water off via the 22mm gate valve in the airing cupboard but these are very unreialble and can shear off, the cold may be tank fed as well.

You are best getting yourself a set of tank bungs.

i think the only thing that links you to the word plumber is your name here if you need to ask such basic questions im so glad im not your customer

Well why would you be my customer if you are a plumber as you state - why the negative respond, Wasnt you a trainee at one point...theres a word for people like you!!

I came here for advise... Not for insults

mate you will always get people out here who will give hard time but at the same time they will teach you alot and everyday is a learning curve and thats the beauty of this work.
All the best on your 1st bathroom and as some one has already mentioned fix isolating valves in the bathroom and then you can switch the water back on. If the bog is in the bathroom too take that one out last. Sort all the pipe work out first. Are you just replacing everything as in like for like or doing everything as in tiling ,plastering , electrics etc. etc.

Im with Steve on this one. You dont know how to turn your water off yet your going to fit your own bathroom? Scary. For me you've already said it all that you will use flexi's. Maybe you should change your user name to Mrihavn'tgotaclue
Good luck though.

whilst we all have to learn (and god help anyone who wants to be a plumber now) you realy should not be learning at the publics expence and risk.

Ha ha lol, The old pipe work has no need to be altered, the only difference is the height of the bath is higher, I could solder an extension but it would seem pointless as i can just attatch push fit flexi pipe. I do have a basic idea it was only somebody through a spanner in the works by saying its different with a combi boiler... I can tile ( who cant?? ) but i m not tiling...Its a starighforward replacement... shouldnt take long at all....Thanks for all the possitive feedback ... and the negatives..just carry on going through life being hated...coz ur obviously sad misrable fogies.... Just hope you dont need advice one day on something you are not experienced in...oh i forgot ...u know everything

i have no problem with anyone starting out as a plumber doing jobs that they are capable of.when you need to ask how to turn the water of it is obviously not something your capable of ive answered many questions on here for people asking sensible questions about a project they are under taking both pro and diy would you employ a electrician in your house if he had to look up how to switch the power of before he started work
have you got public liability insurance?

what happens when you find the existing pipework is old imperial size?
 lol

Food for thought eh?
Enjoy
:D

MrPlonker, dont forget to take photos of the job so you can share them with us. Cant wait to see this lash up.

at least hes getting treated a little better than me when i first joined eh :) seriosuly though so many tings can go wrong with a simple instal such as this so good luck mrplumber.

you say you're not tiling. so you are leaving a gap around the bath where it doesn't fit the tiles because it is a higher bath ?

Mr Plumber you dont sound like a trainee plumber, you sound like someone who only decided to take up plumbing yesterday.

theres nothing wrong with fast track plumbers ,i get lots of work going round after them putting it right.the trouble is after you have someone in who is not capable of doing the job competantly it gets us all a bad name, and it is not that we are scared that you did it fast track so you must be better than us ,it is that we know ,and in time you will learn it takes longer than 8 weeks to be a master plumber, and when we did our training you could actualy fail your exams ,100% pass rate gaurented on some cources the only way you can gaurente this is to lower standerds or give the the quals away,

If you cannot locate the mains stop tap you probably don't have enough knowledge to cope when something goes wrong...

Mr Plumber I really do wish you well, however from the information you have given you have given me the impression that its rip it out slot the new one in. Regretably life is not like that, you need to take your time and have the ability to solve problems you are going to come across.

And please make sure you do have insurance, this is someones home and remember if you start the job you must finish it.
