I have put in a a few outside taps, but all upto now have had the pipework going through the wall straight to the tap, this time i have to have a vertical run of pipe up the outside wall, before reaching the tap. Any advice on what insulation i should use, or any other related advice. Thanks

I'd fit an isolation/gate valve or similar inside before it exits then customer can turn it off for the winter weather. Pipe insulation is better than nothing but not brilliant. MDPE (that blue pipe) is quite good at resisting frost but fittings are expensive.

ive done an outside tap where i had to put a vertical run on the outside i put a isolation valve on inside and insulated it outside

as said else where a valve inside but i would also put a drain of at low level as just turning of the valve leaves pipework full and just as liable to frost damage
ideally it would have a treated wood boxing and lagging
foam lagging is useless if it gets wet

Quick note for "Dontknowitall" above.

Just to remind you, don't put a gate valve on a feed to an outside tap as they are 99% of the time mains fed. Therefore a stop tap or ball o fix would do, but gate valves are not suitable for mains pressure supplies (although I do find them on there ocasionally!!)

On the insulation front, Wickes and the like sell those foam kits which come complete with a little "hat" which slips over the tap to protect it from frost.

Many thanks HTB. I should have said stop tap but wasn't thinking!

i was going to put an isolation valve on anyway,, and a drain cock too, but i just wondered whether there was water proof insulation, as lagging ias useless once wet basically
