I'm still on a steep learning curve with boilers - but I'm getting there.

I'd never heard of Intergas before I found this forum. Technically this system makes the most sense to me:

  • Fewer moving parts
  • Less prone to sludge problems (something to do with larger water channels - not sure about this though)

I haven't checked their aftercare or warranty yet.

Here's my main concern:

Are they a big enough company to keep going in the foreseable? What happens if 6 years after installation, this company doesn't exist? I recently contacted my old (and retired gas engineer), and he's never heard of Intergas.

I think that the Intergas boiler is pig ugly and it would take some effort to convince my wife to accept one - but I would like to think that this would be my only problem with this boiler.

So, no need to convince me of the technical advantages of this system - just opinions on the company please.

In a word, yes. They are very popular in Europe and are now doing their thing over here. A bit like ATAG really, have been very popular on the continent and we're just catching on here.

A bit about them: Intergas, established in 1992, is part of the Air Liquide Group with facilities throughout the world. Intergas is a wholesaler of special gases and gas related services to the gas industry world-wide and exports to more than 200 gas companies and distributors in more than 50 countries.

I looked into fitting them and as an installer the service I got was dire to say the least.

They still have parts to fail like other boilers

As for larger water to prevent sludge any system needs to be looked after to prevent sludge so any boiler runs well if system is cleaned.

Interesting comment about the service provided by Intergas - given the choice I would choose a less reliable boiler but have good aftercare (WB springs to mind).

How many did you fit?

Definitely a Marmite product/company.

In terms of "will they still be here", I would expect so, although 10 years is a long time. At the beginning of my career, the "big names" were Myson, Glowworm, Ideal, Potterton, Baxi and Thorn. Then there was a small company called Worcester, and three importers specialising in those new fangled "combi" boilers - Vaillant, Vokera and Chaffoteaux. (Don't worry, they'll never catch on.)

Most heat exchangers were cast-iron, and some popular boilers were on allocation. (Which means you had to queue, sometimes for weeks, to buy boilers)

Then Myson bought Thorn, Potterton bought Myson, Baxi bought Potterton and finally BDR bought Baxi. Vaillant bought Glowworm, Ariston bought Chaffoteaux, Ideal have been bought and sold three or four times, Vokera changed beyond all recognition, and Worcester rose to the top of the pile.

Looked at from that perspective, the only thing you can be damn sure of, is that the "top" boiler manufacturers of 2026 are unlikely to be the same ones as today.

A very good answer!

Whatever the car looks like, it's easier to buy a reliable second hand car than it is to buy a brand new reliable boiler - I feel like giving up!

I've spoken with him, he's new to the topic and it's very daunting and a topic which seems simple on the surface but is very complex underneath. Swan etc.

Another twist here fit a vokera with 7 year warranty can get it fitted for a grand they are that cheap . After the warranty is up get rid and get another as they are that cheap.
