Its a thermocouple that runs via another safety device, such as overheat stat or TTB switch. So if overheat stat activates it will shut solenoid in gas valve.

A interrupted thermocouple is a thermocouple that is interupted between the pilot light and the power pack at the back of the gas valve
Usually interupted by a high limit thermostat which when activated ie boiler over heats, electrical currect through thermocouple cut, stopping magnetic field in power pack in gas valve, thus closing gas valve and any gas that passes through it,pilot and main burner

Its part of a modern boilers ignition safety system. Basically it does as everybody has said, it is interrupted by the warning signals from various other safety devices.

Usually overheat thermostat, fan control, ttb switch, flame sensing device, oxygen depletion device, and so on.

to be fair deepatel, if you dont know what a thermocouple does why would you want to go on a boiler fault finding course.

you cant work on boilers unless you are gas safe registerd.

so if you do have a problem with your boiler best geting a gsr in to sort it.
