Hi guys

Might have a job in the next week or so removing 6 old rads, I don't scrap anything as it all goes to the yard at work and they deal with it but this would be a private job. Is it worthwhile scrapping rads or just leave out for the scrappies?

x1 700 x 1400
x1 700 x 900
x1 600 x 1100
x1 700 x 1400 double
x1 600 x 900

Cheers

Think iron is worth £90 per ton never really been worth it unless you store them up but I'd imagine the mrs wouldn't be happy waiting for 1 ton of rads to accumulate

Me personally ash I don't as for all u get it just ain't worth the hassle, I call a piiky , Infact I called him today as I ripped out an old back boiler Baxi and Fire front but I don't give him the copper or the cylinder lol

I woulden't bother Ash for the rads !!!

i've got the luxury of storing them here however for the time + effort vs gain i don't bother :)

good to see you're doing more private work !!

How you doing mate? Yeah thanks, getting one or two a week now and that's with one advert and a listing on as many free directories as I can find!

Getting there.....slowly :)

Leave them out the front of the house and they will be gone in 20 mins, make sure you strip the rad valves.

Probably in the region of £4 for that lot. Take the valves off and leave them at the gate.

if you still find yourself skint now and then it is perhaps worth saving them up for a rainy day. however the time and effort versus minimum reward means that for anyone with more than a fiver in their pocket simply cant be rsed

I take them all down the scrappy. A whole system is worth maybe £20-£30 depending on the size of the system and rads but if I'm taking a cylinder down there with some copper scrap anyway it's not much more hassle really. I get the staff to lug them around, getting too old for it myself now! Goes into our Xmas do fund.

I'm the same as most on here. Just phone a scrap collector I know & he takes them away within the hour as he does for old boilers. I save the valves for myself though & any other copper or brass. Nearly killed myself dragging some huge old rads out yesterday so I'm certainly not going to do myself a real injury for a tenner.

I've got a load of boilers to get rid of and I've left it too long so won't be able to get them on 1 van load now! I must get the number of a local pikey to come and collect them.

Fill them with water and put plugs in where the valves were removed.
You might double your money!!

I'm sure the scrap yards are onto this though

If I leave outside the property if they are still there after an hour i'll be surprised.

My local scrap yard now use an angle grinder to cut cylinders in half, then drop them from height removing lime scale etc before it is weighed

You'll probably get about £20 for that, it's better than a kick in the nuts?

I might take them in this time, that way i will find out if it's worth the hassle. :)

If you are fairly busy at plumbing, - then no, it won't pay you at today's prices unless you have a whole van full of metal and your scrap place is local.
If you have spare time, then 10 rads will get you a few quid.
At £90 a ton, that would make a reasonably heavy rad only worth about £3 max

it all adds up and if your taking in yr copper youll get another £40 for the iron, bit more for a load of brass, but the real earner is to spend an hour with a chop saw cleaning off all the elbows n unions, and get the top wack for copper, its my quiet afternoon job. doing that paid for the chop saw on the first load

You need quantity, one or two rads is a waste of time...12 double rads on the other hand when your weighing the cylinder in are worth a drink or two!

Just weighed in somne iron today, van load of mixed, rads and boilercasings, cast hex's 570kg, and i got

£48, but better than nowt i gues. Though copper prices are still poor so will it on that for a bit longer.

I normally hang on to rads until i can fill my van. You dont get much but over the course of a year it does add up. Normally gets spent on something for the tool box etc so its a handy thing to do imo
