Is there any kind of "forensic plumbers"

We have water trickling out of a wall, it seems a pipe inside is damaged, so it may require opening that wall and fixing the pipe.

As it's a rented house, we would like to assure our landlord that we haven't nailed anything there or otherwise damaged the wall.

I wonder if there's any forensic plumbing available to provide an official report for this? Or would any certified plumber be able to do this?

Any advice much welcome.

1. Now that deposits are held with third party government approved schemes the landlord would need serious proof to make a claim.

2. Cost as above.

3. Ll will just claim on insurance anyway.

4. If you mistrust your ll that much get moved out ASAP.

A 'forensic plumber' is a chartered professional, usually but not always a mechanical engineer, who specialises in failure analysis in, er, plumbing. They have to be qualified and experienced at a level that allows them to act as expert witnesses in court cases. So they ain't cheap and are not normally employed directly by the public.

If you really want your own formal report, which will probably cost a couple of hundred quid, contact a chartered building surveyor and ask them what they'd recommend.

In your case, however, I'd start by taking some photos. Take a nice clear set. The first from a distance showing the whole scene then move in to show detail. Send them to your landlord and ask how they want to proceed.

very unlikely to be pipe damaged in wall. check above wall, where pipe coming from. sure you will find leak over bent or joint above leak, but I doubt it is in the wall.

I had a job recently with some damp at base of wall where rad pipes came down in 8mm copper.
I was sure customer had drilled through pipe when fitting a tieback.
I opened up the solid wall and found they had scuffed both pipes with drill between them but not broken into it, the problem ended up being a badly soldered elbow at the bottom.
Under £200 inc some rough patching so customer just needed to sand and paint.
