Hi is there anywhere i can go to do the online City guilds exams Level 2 plumbing with out paying to study or enroll on to a course with a college or training institution.

i.e. just paying for exams.

Do you mean that your already a time served plumber, been in the trade for some time, so you would rather not do the 2 year course, or are you trying to do the super cheap option of revising from a book, dont do any pratical pass your exam then set up a plumbing business?. If its the former fair one, if its the latter, I dont know what to say mate...

If you are experienced but with no paperwork i wish you well in your search but if your just looking for the easy route then i hope you get good insurance policy

For the modules on the plumbing course they have go online which is a little bit harder than paper. Each pupil gets a unique test, with random questions generated from a massive databank. Its harder for the teaches as they get no feedback on whats being tested like a paper exam, they can raed it afterwards. Online it goes straight to City & Guilds and they tell you if you pass or not instantly at end of exam. It does give you a breakdown of number of marks for each subject within whats being examined.

The end of the exam my teacher ask what questions were in there but because its randomly generated and the databank of questions are so large there is no common theme for the exam. For example Before you were guranteed questions about flow rates but now they might not appear and instead you get some very obscure questions that are part of the course but on the old system would never have appeared. Its a lot tougher but I think makes it better as you have to know the whole subject and not the obvious stuff (saying that always carry some books in van) hope this is an ok explanantion

Considering his 2nd post (1 week ago) on this forum was :-
''does concrete, brick work and screed corrode copper due to electrolysis? copper is not ferrous metal is it?
sorry for the dumb questions i am soon to be doing a course in plumbing. lol ''

I'm guessing Scotty wants the qualification without the course or any practical experience. I really hope that's not possible as it would undermine everyone who has qualified 'the proper way', and render the qualification pretty worthless.

There are chemicals in concrete (dont know which ones) that will over time corrode the copper, hence putting denzo tape or some mechanical protection over it. Also on very long runs a significant amount of expansion and contraction can occur. My old lecturer told me 'back in the day' they done a massive vertical run imbedded in concrete on a new build tower block. when it heated up the exposed copper just warped in plant room (not best repeat of story soz)

Sounds like reasonable question to me lol.

the reason being is that I may not be able to enroll at my local college, due to some circumstances. Train4trades/ALT quoted me £5759 to do a plumbing course level 2.

Which made me think is there a way of cutting down that price. If I teach myself the theory and pass the theoretical exams, then £5759 price tag should be greatly be reduced and i can go somewhere to gain practical experience and do the practical assessments.

Having done a quick course or whatever you want to call it and we're all worthless unless your time served blah blah blah, I'm bored already with the responses.

Anyway, the advantage of going on a course and doing the theory in class is that there will be people of all different experience levels etc. The little gems of knowledge that you pick up on the course from instructors etc are worthless Ooooops Priceless.

On my course there was a pipe fitter who did an entire h/w cylinder tanks etc by the time I'd worked out how to use a hacksaw. Learnt a lot from him about bending, pipe that is!

Lots of stuff with the theory too you will need help with as well.

trying to short-cut the short-cut wont work unless you already experienced in the trade, i am assuming your not?.

therefore you need to learn what you intend to do somewhere (try practicing on friends and family) and when you have finished that then the qualification on paper will be a waste of time.imo.

it's all well and good having qualifications on paper but without experience they will mean nothing. no one will want to employ you. you really need to do the proper course whether it is at college or by paying through the nose at a training establishment. preferably at college really imho.

neither of which will give the experience anyway. i think the question meant can train myself the theory, yes you can no problems, in reality it isnt that easy, buy the book and read through it and try to answer the questions, thats will give you an idea of how easy it is
