OK so the question is if I am a naughty boy for helping my boiler and also have I done any damage with regards to asbestos.
Boiler in question is a Potterton Suprima. Here it its.....
When you remove the front plate
You have access to the heating compartment.
And what has happened is the heat shield fell onto the burner so the boiler shut down.
Looking closely at the white panels you can see that the left panel at the top has silver tabs holding it up. In fact all four heat shields have tabs top and bottom.
But the heat shield to the right is missing its top tabs. This caused it to fall over on the burner.
I asked for a Gas engineer to come look at the boiler and he spotted the fault straight away. It cost £80 and he basically propped it up with a screwdriver.
Roll on two months and the coldest nights of the year and guess what the panel fell back on the burner again.
So this time being 8pm at night and with no real prospect of an engineer on a SUNDAY night - having known the fault I have basically copied the engineer but this time to stop the panel dropping on the burner again I made a small little metal clip which you can see in the right side holding the panel to the wall.
My questions are this
1) Have I been extremely clever to have resolved this simple issue. Or have I done something worthy of execution. Are Gas Safe engineers up and down the country screaming at the monitor having heart attacks at this photographed solution.
2) Are the panels asbestos? The original engineer said no, but wore gloves, used water spray to dampen down the fibres and had a gentle hand.
I hope that having done this I have resolved a minor issue. I am not worried about paying another £80 its just that the timing is horrible. Its late on Sunday night and -4oC outside. I have a 1year old daughter trying to sleep and if I can avoid a house plunged into sub zero temps while waiting for a call out then have I used initiative or am I guilty of crimes.
