I like the idea of the lever type for pumps, as they don't appear to seize as easily as gate valves, but I've heard they can leak through the middle when isolated. Is there one to go for that has a paricularly good set of inners to make a nice isolator?

Gate valves for me, at least they have a gland that can be nipped up if it weeps. Not possible with a ball valve.

Decent lever ones don't seem to leak, cheaper screwdriver operated ones often seem to. Especially the cheap full bore ones.

I hear Pegler Yorkshire are good. Most Plumbers Merchants seem to stock them. To be honest even the cheaper lever ones don't seem to be a problem, it't something about the screwdriver mechanism that seems to cause probs.

Is there a particular make for a decent one/something to look for?

yes just dont buy a bag of them from s****fix

i get mine from plumcenter. they cost more but they work and have a definate off.

actually yeah that seems to be the mark of a quality one. a definite off. that plus a deep slip.

Boss ball valves for me although the Peglar ones are as good.
The reason gas valve don't normally leak is because the pressure is a lower

Peglers Bulldog pump valves were top quality, but the large pump nut is not replaceable, like the ones on ordinary pump valves are.
If any of the ball type valves have a white seal at ball, then they should be okay. It is the rubber sealed balls on cheap 1/4 turn pump valves & cheap " ball fix " type valves that means they will leak.
I think the white seals are ptfe seals, but I could be wrong.

What stops a ball valve leaking on gas fittings then?

Gas ball valves aren't subject to high differential temperatures, scale, magnetite, caustic chemicals or pressures in excess of 30 millibars!
Any other questions???

Ever noticed how the threads about things where there are more than one right answer (ptfe or paste, methods of soldering, best fittings) get loads of replies? Now that I've written it I see how unsuprisingly and blindingly predictable this is. Probably shouldn't even post the obversation then. Ah what the...

normal gate style pump valves for me, if they dont shut off properly i just bung the system to try get it to lock, or just get a big pair of palls and go for it with the aqua vac stuck underneath, obv not if they are fully open, only do it if slightly passing lol, i tend to find if you open and close a few times i can get them closed enough to change the pump!
