Basically doing a boiler swap for customer and have come accross a gas fire in the property which has caught my eye.

Now I do not hold my ticket for gas fires, just my boilers and CPA1, however something doesnt seem right with this fire and I am after advise on what I need to advise customer to do.

Basically its a fuel effect fire, one that you place the light coals on the burner. Now I was under the impression these coals needed to be arranged in a particular layout. However this one has just got a big pile of coals. When I asked the customer she said the installer had done it like that a few years ago and that when it was serviced 6 weeks ago the guy had replaced them and used the entire contents of the bag on the fire.

Secondly the fireplace itself is quite sooty, and if I put my hand up in the fireplace opening and behind the cast fire front it is laden to the top with dust/soot/debris. So much so that it is nearly overflowing onto the fire itself. I hope this makes sense.

Lastly the rear of the fireplace is cracked. Again i'm not sure what this part is called but its the bit whoch the burner sits tight to and at the top of it it angles back toards the chimney. How much of an issue is this.

Many thanks

you need to get someone in (or advise them to) who holds the relevant ticket,in your situation i would make it safe (with their permission) until thats done, you have then undertaken your legal responsibility's by informing the responsible person and making a id situation safe

Is it an ID situation then?

Soot on anything is very bad news, cap the pipework off at the resticter elbow (with the customers permission etc etc you know the score) you can do that without your gas fire ticket.

yep id cap it off with owners permission if i didnt have fires i would proberly ask someone who has ,to have a look at it just to cover you,its id and your the last one there

Hold on! DFE and LFE fires are designed to burn badly. Yellow floppy fames give the effect; so soot is not uncommon, but, If in doubt turn it off. Mi's for the appliance will tell all. If its a pre-cast flue with cracked starter block, then this is bad news. Coals should be arranged on the fire matrix in accorrdance with Mi's. Get a qualified person to look at it.

You dont need the fires ticket unless you are working on them, but you have the responsibility to ensure an appliance is visually safe and not showing signs of distress, which you have so are responsible for making the appliance safe ie, capping off.

is it Essential that the fake coals are placed in the correct order ? I don't think mine are I know there are numbers on the bottom of the coals

Absolutley essential to have coals correctly arranged.

thanks, do you mind explaining to me why ? I don't have Instructions anymore so Don't know what way the coals line up. I'm thinking of getting my ticket for fires but with no experience on them whatsover apart from learning in college I don't think that I would be confident in installing one myself.

jst d/c and capped the pipe as a favour wasn't payed for it or anything, it wasn't an inlet fire or anything was a really old fire and the pipe came up from the floor I just cut the pipe and capped it off saved her forking out for it...I wouldn't install one or anything though...I have my CCN1 and CEN1 so I would say that I'm competent to do that anyhow as its pipework....

Coals position is important, to achieve a good coal flame effect so it does not soot up badly. Will always produce poor combustion, but if the products are evacuated safely should not cause an unsafe situation. Totaly reliant on flue flow, spillage tests, not appropriate to do combustion analysis.

there is signs of soot so I've advised the family members not to use the fire, It never gets used anyhow I'll need to try and figure out what order the coals go
