I'm contemplating legalising my electrical work - a minefield in itself.

In the process I've come across this book:

Requirements for Electrical Installations: BS 7671:2008
Incorporating Amendment No 1: 2011: IET Wiring Regulations [Paperback]

Here's one of the reviews:

Yet again the IET have produced a modern classic. Three years on from their last
bestseller, few would have believed they could write another thriller so soon
which would capture the imagination in quite the same way. With Requirements for
Electrical Installations: BS 7671:2008 Incorporating Amendment No 1: 2011: IET
Wiring Regulations, they have proved all those doubters wrong and categorically
established themselves at the head of the shortlist of truly great contemporary
writers.

The reader is drawn into the story from the opening, with the
backdrop for the entire plot uncompromisingly revealed at an early stage. In
spite of this it is impossible to not be drawn in on the rollercoaster ride,
which owes its thanks to the many unexpected plot twists which seamlessly lace
the narrative and truly demonstrate the vast range of the IET's technical
writing skills.

Do not be fooled by my unerring enthusiasm for this fine
work of literature however; the book is undoubtedly a challenging read.
Multi-layered sub-plots flow flawlessly in and out of one another, and some of
the ideas which are presented in the IET's now notorious complex sentence
structure can at times boggle the mind. I urge any prospective readers to
persist with the book however, and they will truly be rewarded with a
thought-provoking story which may well change the way they look at their life,
and the lives of others around them.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend
this book highly enough. The IET have yet again raised the bar for their
contemporaries, and let's hope that Amendment 2 lives up to the hype which is
already being generated in literary circles. Could a film adaptation possibly be
on the horizon? One can only pray.

Cracking review of the regs!
Not so much a rollercaster ride of exciting reading as a tool to help me sleep at night, has to be one of the worst written reference books going.

You can still register with Part P schemes until July this year as the big change to the registration got postponed from the 1st Jan.

Elecsa look to be pretty good, you can register with them so long as you have your 17th Edition cert, the Building Regs certificate and your testing and inspection certificate. They'll want to come out and do a days assessment with you and inspect a couple of your jobs before you are classed as registered. - And take a chunk of cash off you of course, like the rest of the competent person scams

I've got my exams at the end of next month... Thought it was about time I added another stress headache to my life.

I got my Part P about 4 years ago but not my 17th stuff and not joined a scheme either which is why I thought I'd better do something about it, especially having learned that things will be changing this year.

I've found that ELECSA charge something like £450, NICEIC £480 and OFTEC £230.

the review reads like it is a standard template customised for each book. they probably didn't even read the book.

I disagree. More like someone who's fed up with buying an expensive, impenetrable, reference book each time a small revision to the regs comes out.

I completed one of the first part P courses back in 2005 and joined the Corgi electrical scheme all was well until it expired as i was told after 5 years.

I signed up for the 17th edition course in October of last year thinking it was a refresher course as well as new regs.
Cost of course was £550, 3 days revision and a 2 hour multi choice exam on day 4.

After 2 days I realised the course was a load of crap, the entire content of the course was telling you where to find reference material in sub clause/ sub clause and sub clause 5.11.11.134 2 !

My 17th edition book has post it notes out of every orifice and highlighter pen all over the place.

I did a few test exams on the 2 nd evening and even though I could eventually find the answers most of the questions meant nothing to me, still trying to think why most sparkys would need to know regulations regarding Pontoons/ electric fences on farms ect.

I was possibly missold the course but it is the only one available or so I was told to upgrade my current qualifications.

I have never failed a course/ exam in the industry but felt the 17th edition course to be purely for the benefit of the training centre, I did not even bother to attend day 3 or the exam, better to get back out working rather than lose any more money.
