Hi,
Was just wondering when did the UK change from the low pressure water systems(cold water storage tank) in houses to the higher system of using city water pressure at all taps. Or is low pressure system still used.
I'm familiar with the low pressure systems but, I was looking in a British plumbing manual and they showed a full pressure system which they said was the norm on new construction. Is that true?
Thanks,
Rich Davis

since the introduction of combis about 25 years ago and more recently mains fed hot water storage tanks we have been moving towards mains preasure systems
i doubt if there are any new builds that include cold water storage now i often wonder how much stored water has been lost across the uk

Hi. The change came when UK had to come in line with common market. (European systems being direct from main supply) In the UK we changed from water bye laws to water regulations the latter being similar to European spec. Unfortunately the Water Company's infrastructure is well behind, resulting in poor performance of H/C system at peek demand in some areas of the UK. It has also reduced the cost to install and plumbing knowledge of installers, many fitting combination boilers (instantaneous water heaters) to serve properties with two or three bathrooms from a 1/2" supply
Prior to the change 100 gallons of storage in each property was required (London area) allowing public health issues, washing, WC and fire etc, to be maintained in the event of main supply failure. This storage also allowed the pipe size design to be calculated to suit the number and type of appliances. The plus side, if you like this kind of work is you sell the client a new combi boiler every five years and get to fit it.
