hey all,i have just completed my gas acs and i am finding it hard for someone to take me on as i have just qualified. No one seems willing to give me a chance to prove myself.
I live in wales so jobs are not the best at the moment like every where i surpose. Not many smaller companies seem to advertise it seems like you have to know someone who can put a word in.
Hopefully something will turn up,any advice would be grateful
thanx

Hi Adam

Welcome to the forums, hope you enjoy

Hopefully,as you sat, something will turn up for you

Keep kicking at the door
:)

You find yourself in the same boat as 1000's of others. With no experience you will find it hard to get a start in the current climate.
Check out mobs who do gas meters as they are just starting the smart metering contracts and will generally take anyone with a gas ticket.

thanx for all replies-This probably sounds really thick but i got told to try mobs for metering jobs but who are mobs

If i just gave you the answer to that it would be too easy. Use your initiative and find out. There are a few of them different parts of the country.
Clue. They are all mams or their main contractors.
Brain dead work with more paperwork than actual work but better than sitting in the house

WTF was there any need in even replying.
You couldnt of been more helpful.
Dont worry already found out what mobs or mams are so dont need your pathetic clues

Hi

I did my ACS earlier this year, managed to get a job sub-contracting for social housing servicing. Not many jobs around. I was going to install meter's if I had too, but last resort!

Good source of jobs is agencies or the Sun on Thursdays. They have agencies advertising, may not be in your area, but good to get on their books, as some cover nationwide. Also try the job centre website. Search under "ACS", does not recognise the word "gas" as a valid search word.

Cheers

the ACs is just the 5 year installer safety licence, do you have gas or plumbing quals as well?

thanx gasman10,yeah looks like there is alot of subbying at the moment,im just going through the gas safe register around my area at the moment and emailing my cv fingers crossed

hey Adam, see this thread is slightly old now but came across it on another search.
I got qualified a couple of year ago and found it really discouraging trying to get work. What worked eventually for me was to get on the gas safe register (probation period) then get public liability insurance. This really helped me get on board with sole traders out there. Evan tho I was working on a volunteer basis,I found the experience invaluable. I done this for about 8 month. Hard graft and no pay!!
However, I made good contacts and now I have set up myself, I phone on these lads regular for advice.
A huge learning curve, but I take my time.

Hope this helps, or even more so, hope you are already sorted!!

Hey Mike

Thanks for the post,no i'm still not sorted yet,but i am going to get my gas safe in the next couple of weeks so hopefully something might come along,or as you said i will try and volunteer with someone. Was it hard to set up on your own?getting a van etc...

How Adam,
It was expensive! Took a large chunk out of my equity but I guess I was lucky I already owned a house.
Some things I done which may help...
I went to my local business innovations centre, or try business link, and drew up a business plan. This was a total pain, however it did help a little to focus on setting up. With the business plan I was able to get quite a bit of funding.
I got a grant from the council to pay for an Anton 2 gas analyser, funding towards marketing and branding.
Your business advisor will help you and know where monies are available.
As I had been claiming dole, I was able to get around £300 for tools. If you dont ask, you wont get!
Also tax credits, which is about £50 a week.

Again your business advisor should know all about this.

So maybe try that, after all, they are free.

Hope this helps
Cheers

sorry adam, i was asking do you have other related quals, ie gas nvq, plumbing nvq, 6129?????????
