Hi im a newly qualified gas engineer and was asked to complete a landlord gas certificate for a customer. All she has is a newish vaillant combi boiler and a gas hob. For the boiler other than checking the flue terminal and gas rate, what else needs to be checked i.e safey control wise? and obviously doing a gas test.

and on the hob would it just be flame picture and check gas rate.

i would appreciate any replys

Allowable location, kitchen units above etc, case seals, earth bonding, gas pipework sleeved etc. Also has it been fitted to MI, flue close to vents, openable window etc etc.

Check hob controls to ensure turn on/off ok and not sticking, tightness test etc etc. By looking at your landlord cert, you will get an idea of what you should be checking as you have to fill in the relevant sections.

This is also where the whole debate on gas check v service comes into it also. I personally don't do a gas cert without a service, just my choice, but if I'm gonna go there I may as well clean it, stick the flue gas analyser on it and check burner pressures etc whilst I'm there.

Take you time, check and double check until you get more experienced.

Thanks for the quick reply. You've given me a clearer idea of what needs to be done. But also in regards to boilers, what safety controls would I need to check and how would I check these?

you need to check the FFD, just run the boiler and turn the gas off and it should go to lockout, F29 on a vaillant i think. Also have to check what Bronzino said above. Basically its just like a service, I just service them on a landlords anyway, it takes no extra time. If its one of the newer vaillants you need to check that its had the seal updated to a graphite one.

They had dodgy seals for a while and vaillant contacted everyone concerned. There are still some that slipped through and still have the old seals.

whats that about the vaillant seal?.
I had to repair one which had failed and replaced a whole bunch of parts to make it safe. There is a TB on the gas safe website with regards to these boilers
