''Landlords are legally required to organise an annual gas safety check to be carried out by a registered Gas Safe engineer, but more than a third (41%) of tenants report that their gas appliances had broken down several times in the past five years, indicating that landlords aren't taking their responsibilities seriously''.

Quick copy from the above article, articles like this are annoying. WHY because 41% of tennants have reported that their boiler has had a problem is this related to gas safety checks.

If a boiler has had a gas safety check does this mean that it will never break down.

How many times is several? Where did they get 41%, from which organisation, how many people surveyed.

The majority of this article is pure rubbish. But I've not bought a paper since 1989, mainly because I know first hand how poorly stories are reported.

I know a driving instructor who has got a 100% pass rate, Oh thats right he's qualified but has never taken anyone for a test.........

What a load of sh*te! A gas safety check is exactly what it sounds like..... A safety check. Same as an MOT. You can have an MOT at 8 o clock in the morning and the car can break down at half past and most people would go running back to the garage kicking off! People need to be taught that a safety check only proves that the appliance is working safely at the time of inspection

And now I'm on a roll,

What gas appliances are 41% of tennants reporting breakdowns on?

What percentage of those breakdowns are related to dodgy thermostats, 2 or 3 port valves etc etc.

Ridiculous article doing nothing but scaremongering....

survey probably written by a large service and maintenence company wanting to try and increase the number of landlords they cover?

And now I'm on a roll,
....
You are a Squirrel after my own heart.
I rant on like this when I read most of these sorts of articles... and newpapers are best avoided for that reason.

A more useful article would look at the huge proportion of homeowners who do not have anything checked or serviced. Which did a survey on this a few years back. But which surveys tend to be terribly un representative and generally so bad that they aren't worth repeating (even though i do sometimes)...
