Just a very quick ?

If you need to replace a stopcock which comes into the house on lead, should the main supply from the road be renewed in plastic.

I was under the impression that it should be as lead is safe if its not disturbed as soon as you touch it then its evil and leaks lead into the water.

However, I read somewhere that its ok to change the stopcock!

lead incoming mains pipework should always be replaced if at all posible, over time lead is disolved by water passing through it (plumbo-solvant).at one time in some places if you had children under 11 living on premises it would be done free of charge by water board or local council

Yes you can change the stopcock. But you have to use Lead loc adaptors, you can't wipe a joint on them anymore.

I would if I was you, advise them to get it renewed, the water companies seem to have some good deals on replacing lead mains.
