Leaking Bath waste pipe

Okay so I'm pretty good with DIY and have a good set of tools. Recently found water coming from under the bath every time I had one, left it too long and just decided to take the panel off to find the whole floor soaking and the bath waste pipe dripping. I don't have much knowledge but am I right in assuming there shouldn't be water in the pipe if the plug is in? So how is it leaking?? Could it be the plug fixture as a opposed to a loose pipe fitting? See picture of the type of fixture. Can anyone advise how I might go about fixing it if it can be done. Left the panel open and got the de-humidifier out to try and dry the floor in the mean time. Or if you think I should just call a pro in then please say.

The white part is called a trap and will be always full of water to prevent sewer gases, etc coming up the waste.
You need to dry the entire fittings and work from highest point downwards to see where leak is coming from

If water still leaks out when the plug is in place either the plug lets by or the leak is on the waste, probably needs either tightening up or making back in!

The waste being the chrome piece inside the bath.

will either be leaking on the waste or overflow fitting ,do you have a shower over the bath?

Thanks all I'm going to start with the waste, took it out and cleared all the gunk off and replaced with a bit of sealant. Will leave it over night and run a bath tomorrow (fingers crossed). Gas man yes I do have a shower above but leaking only tends to occur when I bath

Check all the nuts are tight and use a torch to take a good look at whole lot.
How much do you cover your body in water, if it's not too personal a question? :smile:
Why I ask this is also check the overflow fitting is sealed and tight. It is surprising how many are loosely jointed.
If you filled the bath very high, or sometimes a shower above it can run water through
