Hi all,

I fitted my basin this evening as part of finishing my diy job. All the hot and cold pipework is fine but the waste has a leak.

The basin is using a popup waste (the one where you press the plug and it pops up) and a Macalpine bottle trap. The leak is coming from where the plastic washer and rubber washer tighten up against the sink on the underneath of the basin. Here are some pics (for the smart alec's I have undone the joint in the pic - that's not the casue :) )....

Considering how much water is coming out I don't know what's wrong. There is only one washer as you can see. I put a little plumber's mait on but that did not help and I tightened just a little past finger tight (but don't want to strip the thread).

Any advice?

you could try using Fernox Lsx External Leak Sealer between basin and washer to seal it.

We fitted them by wrapping a bit of PTFE tape around the threads of the waste just before they come out the basin and carry it on to just past where the back nut finishes. Tighten it up to hand tight, then another half or quarter turn with a pair of pump gland pliers or whatever your preference is for tightening your wastes.

Make sure everything is dry, putting Plumbers Mait on often makes things a lot worse.
It goes like hot liquid eeuk! when the hot water gets on it. A bit of Bos white or blue under the rim of the waste as it goes through the basin helps.

Good fortune!

I use silicone sealant (clear) and put it all around the top of the washer (under the sink). Lots of it forming a complete ring, tighten it, clear excess, then leave for over an hour until I test it. Works first time just about everytime. (Works second time everytime!)

Generally, silicone sealant is good enough drain leaks.

Easiest and cleanest method is to use something called a basin mate. Should be available form plumbers merchants.

ive used the same method for 30 years throw away the rubber washers get a solid plastic waste washer plumbers mate under the flange seat in to basin
roll a sausage shaped mate and put around waste fitting plastic washer and tighten nut till it bites against basin clean of waste and return to tub
roberts your mothers brother job done

Hi Pull the plug out and let things dry out then squirt a drop of white gross down the overflow, this will find its way down on top of the nut/washer assemble, the viscosity is less than water it will seal the joint, leave it for a day or two to dry To much paint will appear through the weir of the waste fitting and down into the trap. Dont over do it. Good Luck

the metal pop up wastes almost never marry up to the ceramic.
ive always thrown away any washers that come with the thing, used plenty of clear silicone, for the top washer. underneath i use the same but literally feed it into the ceramic hole, sensibly enough not to kill the overflow! tighten the nut up and seal around that too.
fast set silicone takes 2 hrs to dry, costs a fiver, i do it the second i arrive at the job, so i know when i fit it hours later its set.
never had to go back to one. however i pity the bloke that changes it all in ten years time.

Has anyone ever used this.... glaziers putty (oily stuff) mixed with polyfilla to make it good to handle rolled into a sausage and hey presto , might be showing my age know :D

I still make lead washers if I cant find a hard plastic one in the van

do what stevetheplumbersays. Throw away the rubber washer and use 1 1/4 polywasher with plumbers mait. Works every time

Just to say guys, I bought a polywasher from my local merchant and fitted it yesterday. Jobs a good un, cheers guys.
