harco

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and new to plumbing. I#ve been stuck in a desk IT job on the phones for the last 5 years and decided enough is enough and to do some hands on work.

I've had a look at a few of the short course training companies but the value for money and quality seems pretty poor.

I've checked out my local college and they provide every course I'd ever need to get started in plumbing so I'll be going along to their next open evening.

Wish me luck!

Welcome to UKPlumbersForums.co.uk harco. Thanks for introducing yourself.

please please harco before leaving your job do a search and get a feel for how tough it is out there to earn a living as a new plumber
even the experienced hands are struggling

ive got a lad who cant start back at college next year as he hasnt been able to get an apprenticeship for his nvq2 experience (as is the same for his 10 class mates) so theres a shortage of level 3 trainees returning next year already. Im working to have him work with me to overcome this but i dont want or need an inexperienced aprentice who cant earn me any money, its bad enough on my own. The college offers agrand to have an apprentice but its not enough tyo make it worthwhile. How will you fare paying a small fortune to a short course co, when lads who are doing courses free of charge cant get work !!

I'll be carrying on my work in IT to start with while doing the first C&G level 2 course part time. After that I'll have to see how it goes. While work might be short I'm determined and not afraid to take a bit of a risk.

If after all the hard work, and time spent on this I simply can't get my foot on the next step of the training ladder then I'll have to go back to IT or start the mobile motorcycle repair business I've always meant to.

I've got a few options open to me, plumbing is what I want to do though.

I'm under no illusions this is going to be easy, at 25 I've missed the cheap college options but at least I'm not loaded down with financial commitments yet.

harco with course fees and self employed costs you are going to need min of 10k and no contacts for work
so many have posted on here with the same dream(not sure why people dream of being a plumber)but reality is a real ball cracker

Well all taken on board, I can plan and save and give it my best shot.

Not exactly a dream of being a plumber but something that I can see myself doing.

nail on the head there.
what with fuel prices forget about plumbing and go straight for the morbike business there is a growing market, get on board now....
