got called out to this problem this morning. i tried using a hacksaw blade to clean it but to no avail. Has anyone got any good methods for cleaning the rim of toilets out? The water is only going half way around the pan

Get some descaler - fernox make some that looks like yellow sugar.
Boil up a kettle mix 2 together and lob it in cistern in 3/4 separate goes and flush - its good for kettles and all limescale

so pour boiling water into a dry cistern? do you not reckon this will melt or deform flush valve and washers?

no - boil a kettle THEN mix 1/4 of the yellow stuff with the water it will cool down cause there is always water left in the cistern and then add more water and flush straight away - the stuff is colour coded as well
goes from yellow - green when its done - cannot remember the code number for the sugar stuff - its also quite harmless
