hello i have recently been contacted about a job where a lfe gas fire is spilling. i dont think the problem is ventillation as the unit is 6.5kw but it hasnt been used since last winter. could the problem be the flames are burning dirty due to dust build up and it requires a service or is it more major and a possible new flue liner and terminal are required???? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

fires are the bad ones, are you gsr?
blocked flue, gas pressure are the two fundamentals. after servicing a fire dont leave without selling you client a co detector. if it comes to it, give it to them

i am gsr but new too it, passed my acs in june. thats how i know it was spilling co detector going off.

treat it as ID, check service sheet from manufactures instructions, easily downloadable for every appliance. make sure your appliance has a data plate and use this only for gathering info. no data plate equals cut n cap. once you have your data sheet follow it. dont fret about what your client thinks if you have to leave job to check it out. explain to them what your doing is for their own safety.
it will be a blocked chimney, or pressures.
good luck

You do not know the fire is spilling because the co detector is going off, that just tells you maybe high levels, not what from
You should know it is spilling because you have carried out the checks and spillage test, pull test,is opening big enough, has draught flap be fixed open ect
Just because the fire is under 7 kw and generally does not need added air supply into room, does not mean that there is deffinatly enough fresh air supply also other items in the room may effect the siduation
In this case,if you need suggestions, would pass on to someone more experianced,it is not a siduation you what to make a mistake on and the possible consequences of you getting things wrong could be to great, just to gain a bit of experiance

Why not go back to basics and do a smoke test to ensure you have a positive draw from your chimney. Have you had your chimney cleaned in the last few years, do you have a cowl or net to prevent birds nests. If your chimney is clear and the draw improves when you open a door or window, then introduce an external air vent to the room. ( In Ireland 100sq cm is required no matter what the input of the fire is !)

Think a good rule that should be adapted over here :)
The customer would only tape it up:(

Possibly a blocked flue, or its even been used for nesting over the summer periods dependent on the cowl on the stack. If its a pre-cast, get a taxi as if its not working now it probably never will do.

Go, take a look, warm it up, test it with a match and take it from there, if it fails, suggest a sweep and take into consideration of whats on the roof, although you have a 7-9inch masonry chimney possibly, if the cowl is a class 2, i.e 5" also take that off as it could be restricting it to.

Check manufacturers specs, some of these fires where intended for use on 150mm flues not 125mm.

Gas flues ain't that simple to fix if they spill, please go careful. You have to reckon up all kinds of things. Cowl, temperature, flue resistance factors and a few other things.

If your not sure check it out!

BS 5440 Part 1 helps.
