Hi my name is jonathan

I am 26 year old operational part time firefighter at margate who is looking to start a career as a plumber leading in gas and heating instillation.

My question is... what is the best possible route to take, to get my career started?

College course or apprentice?

I would ideally like an apprenticeship as there would be a job at the end of it all.

Are there any companies/ firms that are looking for apprentices in the kent area?
Or does anyone know of any companies looking to hire.

Thanks guys...

Welcome Jonathan. To the forum. Surely you will find the perfect time and place for quality and values and answers

What other options are you looking at ? Plumbing Trade not suitable for everyone, and there is no shortage of Plumbers regardless of what you may here , my area is over run , see new guys almost every week, and its not helping the pay rates, Need to take a step back and think about what this job involves , You may be one of the lucky ones that do well at it, others give it up within 12mths, most just getting by.

Hello Jonathan. Like most industries left in this country the government have allowed the marketplace to be flooded with new quick route plumbers and heating engineers. Do not believe what the training centres say i.e "there is a shortage of plumbers" cos there is not and we are not earning mega bucks. Most are struggling to get by.

I saw one of the companies I thought were rock solid and they went out of business just before xmas leaving about 20 guys on the dole. Now I am competing for work with another 20 guys in my area.

I am now earning less than I was 10 yrs ago. FACT.

BTW If you think that at the end of an apprenticeship there will be a job....... Probably not. That is if the company even keep you on to the end

Well DuncanM telling you as it is, only growing part of this industry is the Training centres, turning out plumbers like a production line, guys put on to training by job centres , to make unemployment figurers look good, with little chance of employment at the end it, but you could be the exception to the rule and make it, Good Luck.
