I'm getting to a point where I would like to use a sub-contracet some of my install work.

Anyone have any contractual advice or otherwise usual info for someone who hasn't been down this road before? I don't know at the moment how long it will go on for so don't want to put to much time into it if possible.

After the obvious check for experience, I would write up a contract, make sure they are going to do their own call backs at no extra cost, and if they dont you get paid for going to their work, or that if there is a call back, you will sort it and bill them at x amount, it keeps them on their toes, tools (the borrowing, replacing, buying of should also be covered) cross the t's and dot the i's and you should be ok, I dont sub or employ any more, it can be a lot of grief unless you are covered and you are firm/thick skinned.

what part of kent is the work i might be interested, depending on money etc.

Thanks Derek, gasman rob, the work will be mostly boiler swaps from ideal istors to Worcester combis. Do you have install experiance ? Please contact me via pm with your day rate. Work is mostly in Hawking/Folkestone.

Obviously you got to agree on the money - the amount and when subby will be paid.
You should take a photo copy of their pub liability insurance and when it expires make sure it is reneed - that ay they don't nned to be covered under your pL.

HMRC have a list of rules to determine whether someone is a genuine subby or infact an employee - they refer people to be employees but really you don't want that.
I'll try find good link for you later.
In a nut shell the subby must be respnsible for their own work.
They determin how when they do the job
They use their own tools.
There is a concept of RISK - you take a risk he you take a job and the subby has to take some risk.
HMRC ould like to see subby supplying some materials - but this doesn't have to happen and is NOT good for you if you are VAT registered any subby isn't.
Yes so they have to go back on repairs at their own cost....

Also you have to make arrangements with HMRC - you have to report to them online by 19th of the month for payments and sub tac withheld for month - month ends on 5th.
You are also supposed to pay HMRC the tax by 19th. Between you and I it is not so important to pay the tax on time as it is to do the monthly return - instant massive penalty for late returns.
Also - that plumber ho was sent to prison recently - note it wasnt because he didn't pay tax it as because he didn't submit returns.

Finally you are also suppose to print or email confirmation to subbies a confirmation of of pay and amounts withheld each month.

That's it.
Good luck - just don't expand too close to Thanet, Whitstable or Sittingbourne!!!!

Thanks Tara, I wasn't aware of the tax at all? I thought that if the subby was self-employed it was down to them to sort out?
Don't worry, we can share Whitstable and Thanet. Although your welcome to sittingbourne!! ; )

Mate, you need contracts drawn up, Wages to negotiate, Interview and trial people (who may not last) It is a mine field. My only advice is do not be greedy with what you want to make off their work as you expect them to provide everything i.e van, tools, insurance etc etc. be fair with the money and you can then expect them to do call backs etc, if anything they will go the extra mile to help you if they know they are on to a good thing. Remember you will get the maintenance business, assuming they do not steal it off you. lol.

Tax you have to get set up on line
get their details.
Your have to verify it and get yet another number.
you stop 20%
you declared it to HMRC
you pay it to HMRC.

lots of hassle at first but it becomes routine.

You take cheap end of Thanet and leave the people with money to us!!!!
