Hello

I am thinking about installing a Magnaclean filter to my system. The system is 10 years old and is coventional vented/indirect system. I have not yet bought the filter but need to check whether the filter is fitted to the primary flow or return ?.

I have read a lot about the filters, i presume they are as good as they say that the are ?

Thankyou

Return mate, and after the pump not before. If possible its good practice to fit it after the last radiator just before the boiler and to leave clearence so the cartridge can be removed and replaced when need be.

Further information including specs and manuals can be found here:

Hope this helps.

The advice appears to be fit the magna clean on the return leg of the heating. This is possible but the only real place this could happen is inside the airing cupboard as this is the only area where there is enough pipework exposed to fit the filter.

About 300mm along the return pipework where it comes out from the hot water cylinder is a screw down stop valve. Would it work to fit the magna clean in the space taken up by the stop valve ?. The magna clean has its own service valves so it would kind of act in the same was as the original stop valve ?

sounds like you will only be putting it on the hot water cylinder return if you put it were you state above, should be near boiler,on return, to take heating return and hot water return
If you are putting it on a old system and boiler you could put it on the flow as boiler probably has rubbish in it already, the reason we put it on return on new boilers is that collects rubbish, hopefully before entering new boiler

Thanks for the response. I think i may have confused things a bit with my original description. My system is an indirect open vented system. My boiler which is downstairs in the kitchen is a wall mounted pottern, there is no space above it to fit a filter. Coming up from the boiler through the system the only space where there is pipework that you can clearly see is in the airing cupboard. The central heating return pipework comes out of the cylinder and about 300mm after this is a stop valve, the type without a tap on it, screw down type i believe. If i was to remove this stop valve and introduce a magna filter in its place, would the filter still capture the rubbish floating around the central heating pipework ?

Theyre great little products but you'd need a powerflush before fitting as you'll constantly have to clean it. They're also badly designed and a pain to fit as the ends arent long enough to fit into the pipe. Constantly leak

Thats what I was saying above Steven, the pipe coming out the cylinder is not the return from the heating,it is the return from the cyljnder only, this pipe will tee into the radiator/heating return just before boiler, the screw down valve you speak of,may be the flow restricting valve for cylinder, allowing system balancing,so you do not wany to remove that anyway

Thankyou, i think i have grasped what you are saying.

My problem is still where to actually fit the filter. There is only a short section of pipework available within sight of the boiler, too close to the boiler itself.

Any suggestions of where i could fit the filter where there is pipework that is visible/accesible ?

i've just noticed that they are testing them to 2 bar!!! bearing in mind fitting to a combi system!

Steve, they are a great product and I fit them whenever the customer will pay. I have not had any problems with leaking or the installation. You can fit them on the flow pipe if you cannot find a suitable position on the return pipe. I think you will find that you have to clean it very frequently for the first few days after you fit it. You will be amazed at how much dirt they filter out. As noted earlier normally the system would be flushed out prior to fitting.
