I am looking at installing a thermal store (Glendhill Torrent) and currently have a 15mm water supply from the water meter. Flow rate is currently 24 litres per min with a dynamic pressure of 4.4bars (taken from tank position).

My questions for those with more experience than me are

1) will upgrading the 20meters of 15mm pipe from the water meter to 22mm improve flow rate further even though the incoming plastic blue pipe (diameter 25mm) is reduced to 15mm before it goes into the water meter and as it leaves the water meter before I can make it bigger? i.e Will the restriction make the upgrade to 22mm pointless or is water flow not necessary restricted by the short length of pipe size reduction?

2) It would be easier in this particular installation to create a 15mm ring from the water meter and at the point this ring joins use a 15/15/22 tee to then go off in 22mm to the thermal store – will this work and have a similar effect to 1) above

3) Is either of the above worth doing?

4) Will either options listed above reduce the water noise (currently lots of 90 degree bends creating noisy paperwork) or am I better trying to replacing the 90 degree bends for slow hand bent sections?!

Any advice on the above is appreciated :)

The short restriction will have an effect ,however there will still be a big advantage of increasing the size of pipe work from meter to outlets and appliance

This will work,you will loose some pressure due to greater resistance using two pipes instead of one,find it hard to believe you cannot run all in 20/22mm but if needs must,this would work ok

yes,very much so

Well by increasing supply size,the water has less restriction when in use,which is causing the noise ,so therefore sound will decrease,however after said that,I do not know system now,if you will be increasing required flow rate through the new pipe work,you could be matching the present flow rate through each 15mm pipe you intend to use,so sound would be the same,

Any advice on the above is appreciated :)


As said would increase size to 20/22mm and do correctly
