Hi

pleas bare with me because I'm not technical at all!!!

we have a stelrad group ideal elan boiler, the box with the switches on says that the CH is on but if we click override nothing happens the boiler doesn't kick in. However if we try to override the hot water it does...

weve tried messing with the thermostat too, that clicks as normal when you turn it up but the boiler doesn't come on like it should!

No idea if there's something else we can do or if we need to call someone out - if we need to call someone out who do we call? British gas or an electrician????

thanks!!

Hi Leanne.

Does the central heating come on as usual on the timer?

Is the heating working at all or is it just the "override" feature that is not working?

The heating isn't coming on at all, it's only the override for the hot water that works...

Get a local GSR round to have a look for you. Where abouts are you based?

Ignore that. Just reread your post.

If you go to your airing cupboard you should have what look like a couple of boxes sitting on your pipework?

Good. One sits on the pipe going to your hot water cylinder and one sits on the pipework going to the heating.

Both have little lever arms on. The one going the heating, can you go and look at the lever arm on it. You should be able to move it over to the manual position and latch it open. Then tell us what the boiler does.

Actually I think I was looking in the wrong place, I can't find any boxes over any pipes. I've just had a look at the box under the boiler where the switches are and when I click to override the CH and it clicks like it should (it wasn't clicking before) but the boiler doesn't come on like it does with the hot water and its making a weird low noise that we can hear in the bathroom where the water tank is...

We have the boiler in the kitchen and the hot water tank in the bathroom but you can't get to it because its behind a wall :/

Oh god, well thanks for all your help anyways!! At least we sort of know what to expect when someone comes to sort it. Just a quick question though, am I better turning the CH off due to that noise that we can't work out where it's coming from...??

I think it's a knackered zone valve Tamz. Hidden behind a wall.

Leanne love, I'm sorry but you will have to turn the heat off. It's unlikely that anything could happen but I'd rather you not run the risk.

You need to phone a plumber/heating engineer. The job including parts should cost no more than £200.
