Newly qualified engineer here. If repairing a non gas related fault, ie electrical fault on boiler, controls etc, or when working on the wet side of a system what are my obligations as far as safety checks go. I obviously wouldn't pass on anything sticking out like a sore thumb but do I need to comply with all the normal checks I would do when carrying out gas related work such as burner pressures, gas rates, tightness test etc.

Depends how professional you want to be. Something I was taught that if you need to ask whether something should be done or not you know the answer.

i would just do the task i was there to do and then maybe recommend or advise a service if i think the boiler needed one, customers dont want problems, but if there was an AR/ID situation then by law you have to act on them

If you are there for an electrical fault which is stopping the boiler working, you fix it and the boiler fires up. How can you be sure it is operating safely? I always check the basics, burner pressure/gas rate, check fsd's, FGA if needed and give a visual check. Doesn't take a great deal of time and that way I leave a job happy that its all safe.

imo, i have always been taught with , start with a tightness test before anything,(but lets not go there as this is one hugeeeeeeeeeeeee debate i could start)

i always do the basic checks, replaced a pcb not long ago on an old worcester 28Cdi, boiler fired up but burner pressure was way to low, and gas rate was appalingly low aswell, after much head scratching as to why this was i looked under the boiler to find the gas isolation valve at at the boiler was half cocked open. i opened it fully and wehey perfect. the customer said the hot water has never been so hot. not suprising when the burner pressure was 3mb at full rate before hand. i couldnt believe it.

so what does an electrician do when he is sent to repair an electrical fault stopping a boiler working

I meant an internal electrical fault on the boiler itself, like a fuse could have blown on the pcb. As far as I am concerned if I am working on the boiler, be it water carrying part or just changing a fuse on a pcb, I was the last person on site and I will safety check it.

so will you do a tightness test even though you havent touched any gas carrying parts and check any other appliances in the property are safe

Always carry out the minimum statuatory safety checks, once working on the appliance.
ie, change a radiant on a fire, as a gas engineer, the fire req's removing chimney checking, & all checks relevant.
Do a thorough job charge a proper price.

I went to a job yesterday, to service a worcester 28i, completed all the checks etc etc etc etc the usual jazz. I ended the Job with a tighness test (Now I was always taught a Tightness test is not needed when you service an appliance, But Since starting my own buisness I Always include one) And to my horror There was a considerable drop over the 2min period something like 5mbar, anyway it was way over the acceptable pressure drop for a U6. So after roughly about 2 1/2 hours of tearing my hair out trying to find this gas leak I finally found it, it was Bascally where the Flexy cooker hose connection is made to the appliance, the idiot who had installed it hand not used any gas tape!!!!!! They had also installed the bayonet fitting the wrong way up :0!!!
