Hi chaps - just nipped over from the sparks forum to pick your brains.

I want/need to get my own gas meter moved at home because 1) the outside wall it's on has seen better days and needs rebuilding 'regardless' but 2) I'd like to get rid of it altogether (it's a short wall at 6' height at 90degs to the house that bridges to the boundary) and open that side of the property up.

Now, I know that's a job for Transco / whoever my energy supplier appoints, and it only needs moving literally a few feet and turning 90degs to the other main house wall but I really don't want another big white meter box as that too will just obstruct.

Ideally it would be great if it could be put into some kind of buried inspection pit but I've not seen that anywhere before so figure it's not done - what are my options and are any of them ridiculously more expensive than others?

Thanks in anticipation!

Only transco can advise on this one sorry

It's not a job for us meer mud-bloods

a sunken brown meter box is what you probably want.

Thanks for that - do I need to get it or will Transco provide one on request? AND - at the moment the outlet pipe from meter to house runs at roughly DPC level before going vertical and in, does the meter end of the 'new' pipe then get made to go sub-ground and a sunken 'U' to get back up into the box again or can they slip in through the back?

You really need to talk to transco. You also need a gsr to repipe downstream of the meter.

OK....mods might want to move this somewhere more suitable as I realise this probably isn't the right sub-forum - but: Am really confused now! I had a look on the transco website and it says that my post code isn't one of theirs, it's an outfit called Crown (never heard of them). So, left a contact message and they called me earlier. Quote to move a meter 6m, with me having done all the ground-work, reckon it'll be a joint to make and a new thread onto the meter - tops an hours work plus a bit of pipe - £1400 plus VAT. So, I told the girl on the phone that I thought that was taking the pi$$ big time and she said fair enough and I was welcome to get other quotes. So I assume from that that it's a free market on getting it done - but if so, where from?!!

Appreciate your patience on this gents, am an 'arms' member over on the other side - feel free to ask any sparky questions!

There are plenty companies out there who are qualified and allowed to work on 'live' mains gas supplies. I'd do some googling 'Rockingit' ... There'll be a few in your area who can better advise I'd imagine :)

The semi concealed meter box you can get from Mitras composites. The outlet pipework from the meter side normally all runs above ground and into the house. The problem you'll have is getting the fittings to work on the outlet side of the meter. There are other companies out there that can do this kind of work. I used to do it for Clancy Docwra until they lost the contract. Might be worth calling them. I wouldn't mention the £1400 quote though.

It's an expensive job to have done.

i had mine moved a few years ago before I became gsr. They charge u a fixed price, say £400 then charge you around £50-£100 for every meter you want it moving.

My meter actually went from the inside wall to the direct opposite outside wall, therefore say minus 1 metre, they still charged me for the supposedly extra metre it had been moved

By the way once it was all done, what they don't tell you is they are not qualified to connect the supply pipe in your house back to the gas meter so u have to get a gsr to complete that for you, so more money there. That's how I started my career
