we were sent to replace some leaking 2" pipes in a plantroom, system needed draining, it took 2 hours to drain off properly. drained down, fixed problems, filled up, starting to get late in afternoon.
as usual i had disturbed a different joint that decided to lose water at a good rate of notts, another drain down required.
Young Adam who dosn't enjoy a late finish, decides the quickest way is to open the 2" header return! i decided to go with the flow and enjoy the show. i discreetly place myself on the otherside of the room, whilst geeing him on.
when the joint broke, it was like a fountain, 2" pipe with about 2000 litres behind it at 1bar, quite a sight. spewing all over the ceiling wetting everything in its path, including young padi wan.

he did impress me tho.

it popped, his face dropped (and got wet) he jumped back a metre, stared for a second. contemplated, then ragged his jumper off and tried to staunch the flow with said jumper.

it was hilarious to watch, but you might of had to be there!!
most apprentices i know would of just run a mile.

adam is gonna be a good one.

good luck mate

Good on the Lad, for trying good practice for later on in life, I remember one job, I has, it was 1st Jan (when it was a working day) the job was to replace a "live" lead soil stack with a cast iron one

Being a youngster, back then, I had spent the best part of the night in Trafalgar Square celebrating, and did not feel like work that day, I staggered into work about an hour late, only to be told that there was an urgent job the other side of London to do, a pump change, nothing too bad I thought

After a couple of hours travelling by public transport (before plumbers had vans to ride around in:D), through ever heaver snow, I arrived at the job
Nothing too bad a sump pump change in a nice warm boiler room:p

A 3' deep sump, about 4' x 4' with a 4" drain, running half full of ice cold water, 2" galvanised iron pipe, now the fun and games begins, every connection was under water, and the unions were rusted up, I tried every way of getting to the unions, was sweating my cobs off because the boilers were going flat out, in the end I said nothing for it, the boiler man said what do you mean ??, this I said stripping off to kacks and boiler suit, then getting into the pit, was it bl00dy cold, my nuts recoiled so fast that I thought that I had Mumps, but it was the only way to get some leverage on the unions to undo them to get the pump out

I think I am glad I havent been a apprentice  mind you working like that guess you do genuinely learn loads and loads, not like me fumbling around trying to get it all working.

i know we all had good times as young apprentices, my boss was a total git to me, but i enjoyed it all the same, think that me it worse. still loved it. its made me the man i am today ( wife says that should be "woman i am " dont even have too ask her )
