My washing machine pipe doesn't connect to the standard attachment

When the installer came to install my washing machine, he was mystified about the pipe attachment in my house. The metal pipe doesn't appear to have any threading, just a bolt around the end. Because of this the standard pipe attachment doesn't connect.

Do I need to buy some kind of adapter and if so, what?

Can you post a photo of what you have? It’s no good guessing. You’d need a washing machine valve usually.
