Mysterious leak but no sign of water!

I've got a noise sounding like running water/ water passing through my pipes under my sink in the kitchen.

There is no leak anywhere in the house that I can see but there must be water escaping somewhere as it sounds like water is constantly passing through the pipes, am I right in thinking that there wouldn't be any pipes directly under my house therefore there couldn't be any water escaping from under the house?

Basically I can't understand why it sounds like water is passing through the pipes but I can't see any signs of where there is any leaking water.

Has anyone got any advice or ideas as to what this is?

do you have hot and cold pipes buried in a concrete/cement floor?

Possibly a cictern somewhere overfilling and you can hear the water running as you are near the main cold water inlet. I'd check your header tanks/cisterns first. Probably a float valve needs servicing/replacing.

It's a leak on incoming water main some where, noise will travel along the pipe. it could be quite a distance from the sink.

Turn the water off at the stopcock and see if it persists.

Underground leak somewhere. Turn off main stopcock, external to property i.e in the street/ footpath. If the sound stops then there is a leak between property and main stopcock. Inform your water supplier

As Ecowarm says, noise travels through pipe and I've had this many a time and found the leak to be an underground burst outwith the property.

I believe its a leak between external and internal stopcocks.I dont want to worry you but it is best to get it done soon, as it may be washing away the house foundations.Contact local water authority

Came across this a few months back on an under floor heating job. We were knocking the screed and slab back to fill with insulation and lay the heating grid, and when we banged the slab up, the earth beneath had just been washed away. The leaking mains in the kitchen had just washed it away. I could push a steel rod down by about 3 foot.

It was a lot of work to put right. So ensure the water under your concrete isn't leaking. Not hard to check it.

The local water authority aren't responsible for the pipe work in your home. You need to contact a plumber in my opinion.

If you are on a shared water main, common on older properties, then it could be water running at the neighbours.

I had this the winter before last, it was super cold. Locking up to go to bed and could hear water running, :uhoh2:checked that nothing was filling/leaking inside. Put my ear to the rising cold and definite sound of water rushing, figured must be a leak underground.:uhoh2:

But then just thought to check next door which was empty at the time, its a Victorian house and you could at the time go through my kitchen loft and into next door.
As soon as lifted the loft hatch found the problem bust pipe above next doors kitchen, climbed through dropped in at midnight as you do and turned stop tap off.
