Hey, im new to the forum, But im also in a hurry,

I need a BEAST plumber to help me out here.. ill be VERY thankfull to whoever helps.

Im at college and i need help with these following questions, i have a test which will include some of these questions tomorrow, Test is on HOT water.

------- Intensity of heat, how is it measured?

How does heat affect solid, liquid, gas?

How is the volume of a substance measured?

Prevention of airlocks?

Principles of convection most commonly found where?

How do we prevent one pipe circulation?

What valve should be used according to schedule 2 of the water regulations?

Problems with combination cylinder?

What is connected to the highest point of a primary circuit?

Most common sized Cylinder?

What is the term used for noise in hot water pipes?

The term used for shock waves in pipes?

What should a single feed indirect cylinder not be fitted with?

A combination storage cylinder is?

Types of instantaneous water heater?

Which type of indirect system does not need a feed and expansion cistern?

What is the cause when no water comes out of the taps?

What heat emitter will heat a room the fastest?

On a heating system using a back boiler one pipe is used for the flow and return, what is this system known as?

Which radiator valve has tamper proof cap to stop people from using it?

-------------

I agree Danielp. The trouble with these questions is they only really deal with the theory and not the practical.

For example, "What is the term used for noise in hot water pipes?" I assume the answer is water hammer.

But how many customers are going to phone and say, "Is that the plumber? I've got water hammer in my hot water pipe every time I drain off some hot water. Can you fix it?"

They will be saying, "Is that the plumber? Every time I turn a tap on there's a banging in the pipes. Can you fix it?"

There will be very little in the exams and courses about how to fix the problem. The examination setters and qualification companies are more concerned about the names of things like this, as opposed to effective training of plumbers of how to diagnose and sort out plumbing problems.

Sleepy - with all due respect to the experience "old hands" I'm not sure that many of them will know the answers. You're more likely to find the newly qualified people know the answers instead.

Hope you pass though and have a good time as a plumber.

Thanks,

You made a valid point and i know, Whats the point in Teaching us stuff that your not going to hear/see in Real life Situations. Like In my college they Teach swaging a LOT, but to my understanding You are not alloud to swage any more.

Hi Sleepy. Courses are made to pass if you can not be asked to read through the notes/ books recommended to you by the tutor, and ask when not understanding content. In my opinion there's no hope. Pull out the game and give someone else a chance.

I am afraid to give simple answers to those questions, is quite a job. And considering the small amount of time to answer them in it isn't really practicable.

And anyway you've got to remember them for tomorrow.

Why not simply Google them?

And then come back on and ask the ones you can't find answers too?

Intensity of heat measurement can be temperature by the way, but you have posted so many, its a bit hard to decide what sort of answers you want. Short or long?

Sorry, Sleepy - just couldn't resist this one!! This isn't aimed at you but the question setter.

Don't you just love it ...

What is the cause when no water comes out of the taps?

What a STOOPID question - it could be all sorts of things like:

Someone superglued something up the spout
The tap's not attached to the pipe
The tap is still in the box
Frozen pipe
Water leak elsewhere
Air lock
No water in cold water cistern
No water coming into the house
The telephone company cut through the pipe
The gas company cut through the pipe
The isolation valve isn't open
Winnie the Pooh sat on it
The well's dry
The kitchen collapsed and squidged the incoming mains
The fire brigade down the road diverted the mains to put out a fire
The government

You could write a 300 page book on possibilities.

i thought it was multi guess in exams now well it was when i went to college.
like dontknowitall said they are a little bit starnge the questions as there could be lots of answers for most question's

I can help you with most answers.

------- Intensity of heat, how is it measured?
Kw

How does heat affect solid, liquid, gas?
It causes expansion

How is the volume of a substance measured?
L(cm) x W(cm) x H (cm) = litres

Prevention of airlocks?
various answers but install an air vent at high points. Open lower oulets/rads first

Principles of convection most commonly found where?
Radiators

How do we prevent one pipe circulation?
Install a non return valve

What valve should be used according to schedule 2 of the water regulations?
Stopcock??

Problems with combination cylinder?
Not suitable if a large volume of hot water is required as F&E tank is small.

What is connected to the highest point of a primary circuit?
Air vent

Most common sized Cylinder?
36" x 18"

What is the term used for noise in hot water pipes?
Kettleing/expansion

The term used for shock waves in pipes?
Water hammer

What should a single feed indirect cylinder not be fitted with?
Valves on the outlet/vent

A combination storage cylinder is?

Types of instantaneous water heater?
Single point & multi point

Which type of indirect system does not need a feed and expansion cistern?
Closed circuit system for example - many modern combis

What is the cause when no water comes out of the taps?
Too many to list

What heat emitter will heat a room the fastest?
Fan convector

On a heating system using a back boiler one pipe is used for the flow and return, what is this system known as?
Single pipe system

Which radiator valve has tamper proof cap to stop people from using it?
Lockshield

Hope this helps, but I don't think you are any better off without practical experience of the above

Steve

next time do not leave it till last minute, would be my advice!!

your at college to learn, and eventually take over my job!!

i agree the questions are really ambiguous with many answers. but put more effort in yourself to at least post your possible answers/thoughts with your questions.

what would happen if this was your last test.... pass or fail the entire course, become a plumber or not and nobody answered your questions?

study hard mate.

good luck
shaun

Thank you plumbnuts,

migoplumber, My Teacher is a DICK. he doesn't tell us when tests are he just says maybe 2 days in advance if your lucky... So you can't really revise?

Anyway, CLOSED now, test is over.

Thanks to everyone that posted.

plumb nuts, many of your answers are wrong

VOLUME IS ALWAYS MEASURED IN ANY UNIT CUBED m3 ft3 cm3

intensity of heat is temperature ie centigrade ...KW is a measurement of energy not heat?

the list goes on...............

one pipe circulation would be a question about how you come off the top of a cylinder not a non return valve !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't be bothered to waste time explaining the answers to you. First time i've ever heard of a cubic litre though when determining volume. But as you say - "VOLUME IS ALWAYS MEASURED IN ANY UNIT CUBED"
The list goes on....................................................

Got the final exam tomorrow for my BGU course (the one leading up to ACS), most guys on course are "mature" individuals (ie over 30) except for one eedjit who is early twenties going on twelve, his attitude would seem to be similar the guy who started this thread in that whilst everyone else is getting into the books and working relatively hard to actually gain the theoretical knowledge required to pass the (open book) exams he would rather bump his gums all day about his chavmobile, his chick, his dog, himself in fact anything except gas safety, and then annoys everyone by interrupting them during study and bugging us all for answers during the exam. He turned up today for the last practise open book exam and guess what he had forgotten to bring,,,,,you guessed it,,,,his book. ****ing useless Chav that he is.

plumbnuts and leakylea, if you want to have a row, do it by private messaging please. not here.

HTB good luck for tommorow.

Migoplumber
What row? Just a reasonable and factual reply in the same tone.

Thanks Shaun, I'm fairly cool about it, as like most guys on here, we know if you want the results you have to work hard for them. Lets see if I'm right.

Cheers.

migoplumber, My Teacher is a DICK.

No if you want a dick, i think you better look closer to home! 2 days is more than adequate to revise for an exam, and if thats the level of difficulty then you should already know 50% of the answers and the other 50% are common sense.

And as for posting your revision questions here?! yeah ok 1 or 2, but an entire revision sheet? Well sleepy i think you should go back to sleep.

Whats the point in Teaching us stuff that your not going to hear/see in Real life Situations

Its called underpinning knowledge........You lazy little sh*t!

As for plumbnuts answers and leakleas arguement, kW is a unit of measurement for power, to measure the intensity of heat would be temperature!

Hi Sleepy,
My best advice would be to invest in the new Heinnman version 2 book, it has all the subjects covered in the new C&G online testing, version one misses out too much of the new questions.
The book also comes with a cd which has a selection of sample questions, although just learning the questions will not be enough to pass the exam.
It appears that most of your questions have been asked but would advise on the following;
To prevent one pipe circulation the open vent from the hot water cylinder needs to be connected at least 450mm away from the top of the cylinder
I also think the question on what should not be connected to a single feed indirect cylinder, should be what should not be added and the answer would be corrosion inhibitors.
Hope this helps
P
