Hi there,

I live in South Wales and am currently having my house connected to mains gas. I would like to have the new meter installed underneath the staircase as it is a lost space anyway.The guy from Wales and West utilities seemed to say tHis morning that I would be unable to have it there as it needs on the front wall. Are there any reason for this? Can one have the meter where one wants in one's house? At the bottom of the stairs werethey would like t fit it ivery inconvinient a I would tumble over it! Who actually installs meters? Gas companies? The same company which is creating and installing the new connexion?

Thanks for your help!

They will not put the Meter in your home as it at extra cost for them, plus they maybe not covered to enter customers homes could also be due to access to the Meter

Not sure but that's my guess

New installs go outside now, as it's easier and cheaper to install, the meter reader doesn't need in, and if it moves to smart meters then it can be accessed far easier if required, so they choose where to put it and it's usually where it suits them

The gas Transporter, Wales and West, install the gas service pipe, which then determines where the meter is, adjacent to that pipe.

In a word no, it's not recommended to have it under the stairs for reasons of safe escape in the event of a fire.

From the Gas regs;

107 Meters need to be installed, where reasonably practicable, in accordance with paragraph 106. If it is necessary to install a new or replacement meter on or under a stairway, or in any other part of premises, where the stairway or that other part of the premises forms the sole means of escape in the case of fire:
(a) the meter should be fire-resistant;or

b) the meter should be housed in a fire-resistant compartment with automatic self-closing doors; or

(c) the pipe immediately upstream of the meter, or regulator if fitted, should be provided with a thermal cut-off device which is designed to automatically cut off the gas supply if the temperature of the device exceeds 95°C.

Snowhead, is your quote not for houses of at least 3 storeys?

No, here's the part re 3 storey and the overlap to my post;

General

105 Building designers and contractors need to consult the gas supplier/transporter mutually to agree the position and housing for primary meters at an early stage in any new building development.

New installations (premises with two or more floors above the ground floor)

106 Meters should not be sited on or under the stairway, or in any other part of the premises, where the stairway or that other part of the premises forms the sole means of escape in case of fire.

All other installations (including premises with less than two floors above the ground floor and replacement meters in premises with two or more floors above the ground floor)

107 Meters need to be installed, where reasonably practicable, in accordance with paragraph 106. If it is necessary to install a new or replacement meter on or under a stairway, or in any other part of premises, where the stairway or that other part of the premises forms the sole means of escape in the case of fire:

they will no longer put meters inside a normal house, especially under a stair case.

if you dont want it on the wall have it in a ground box.
