Hi Everyone,
I have been to a flat and he is requiring a new gas pipe instead of the steel pipe he currently has.
The new gas pipe will be from the downstream after the ECV on the outlet side of the meter.
The stell pipe in the flat will need to be got rid of, some of it in the wall. What will have to be done to the original gas line in the house...can this be cut and left or all outlets be capped even though not used.

Regards

You should always capp and outlets used or not a) its good practice and b) you never know who may reconnect on to it and not know about the open ends. There was a post on the forum couple months ago about where someone had open ended pipes in there flat of a old communial system and another flat relinked on to it and it made a big mess, granted not gas like your asking about bout something to keep in your mind

Is the new gas pipe going to same place as steel, if so, cut it all out. Saves a lot of future issues and hassle

Don't forget that you can't use copper in communal stair wells though.

Fire risk. You can use copper but no joints allowed in the communal area so it's simpler to say no copper because it would be rare to get a pipe run without joints.

if you did want to use copper in would have to be built into a fire proof box in reality, otherwise steel will be needed, as mike say's its for fire risk. Also you cant run through another dwelling unless its in a fire proof box. This is why you see many new build flats with gas pipework running up the walls on the outside, avoids many costs.

The local 3.142 keys love external copper pipework!

Quite a few occupiers of flats around here have woken one morning to find all their pipes have gone.

not in a communal area as far as i know. Did a job with trac pipe as gas run in 4 story appartments, we had to run it in purpose build service cupboard which exceeded required fire protection.

The existing connection is steel going to two gas heaters on the walls, one in the bedroom and one in the lounge.
We are going to run new pipework to new radiators, so we could pull it all out.

why does he want the steel taking out ?

Hi Bod,
the gas heaters on the wall in the living room and bedroom are coming out and being replaced with a boiler which is in the cupboard next to the gas meter. The steel runs from meter in the opposite direction under the floor.
