So, we've just moved into a new build property that has a boiler and water tank system for heating and hot water. I programmed the hot water to come on twice a day and the heating is on at a background low level.

What I have noticed, is that the hot water tank seems to keep "firing" up throughout the day, even when the hot water is programmed to not be on and the heating is most definitely not on either.

My question is - is this normal? I asked the builders and their answer was that it is firing to maintain the temperature of the water heated during the "on" timings however that seems to defy the point of having settings and am worried there is a fault somewhere which is going to result in huge bills. Because I've never had this system before and don't necessarily understand what's normal, I don't feel I can be more pushy with implying there's something wrong. The pipes around the hot water tank get hot when it makes the noise. And there's a red tank near it which doesn't make a noise (I understand that's more to do with heating).

There is a back up immersion setting for the water tank but that is DEFINITELY off as the switch is off both at the wall and at the fuse box in the garage.

Yes you are right it shouldnt be coming on during the day if its not in an actual programme, it sounds like a wiring issue or maybe a dodgy programmer. I would defiantly get back in touch with your builders
